On the 18th (local time), according to Fox Business, Starbucks is currently providing eco-friendly 'compostable' cups to replace plastic cups in stores across 14 states, including California and Washington.

'Compostable' cups are made from special molded fibers, allowing them to be composted, an eco-friendly method of disposal. Unlike plastic materials that remain in the ground for a long time without decomposing, they pose less risk of environmental pollution. The appearance of compostable cups is said to be similar to that of white paper cups, with a texture akin to paper cups.

Starbucks has been providing hot drinks in paper cups and cold drinks in plastic cups. However, stores using compostable cups will no longer use plastic cups in the future.

Starbucks explained the background for the introduction of the compostable cups: 'We transitioned to cups and lids that can be composted to reduce waste and meet the demands of local markets.'

However, the media reported that not all customers are welcoming the compostable cups. There have been numerous complaints posted on platforms like the largest online community in the U.S., Reddit.

Some internet users pointed out defects in the compostable cups and lids. They expressed complaints such as, 'It's inconvenient to drink from them' and 'The design of the cup and lid is flimsy, causing spills.'

There were also comments noting that it is inconvenient as filming 'TikTok drinks' is not possible. TikTok drinks refer to videos showcasing beverages in transparent plastic cups. Unlike plastic cups, compostable cups are opaque and do not allow the contents to be seen.

Starbucks stated, '(If customers do not like the compostable cups), they can bring their own reusable cups or receive beverages in ceramic mugs or glass cups.'
