A warning has been issued that sleeping with socks on all day can be harmful to health.
According to a sleep clinic in Cleveland, United States, on the 13th (local time), wearing socks while sleeping dilates blood vessels and promotes smooth blood flow. It helps maintain the body temperature at an optimal level.
However, it was pointed out that wearing socks that have been on all day into sleep is not hygienic.
According to a recent survey conducted by a British mattress company among 1,130 users of the social networking service Reddit, only 30% of those who wore socks to bed had clean socks on.
However, an analysis of the microbial content in 8 pairs of socks worn throughout the day revealed that there were 20 times more bacteria detected than in a toilet bowl. Bacteria that can cause infections, such as dust mites, mold, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, were also found in the socks.
Bacteria related to feces were also found in 25% of the socks. The research team suggested that this contamination is likely due to environmental factors such as walking barefoot at home or cockroach droppings.
Experts recommended wearing clean socks to bed for hygiene. They advised wearing indoor shoes at home as much as possible to prevent sock contamination and reminded to frequently wash bed sheets.
They also noted that sleeping in clean socks is beneficial to health. The study found that people who wear socks fall asleep 7.5 minutes faster and sleep 32 minutes longer.
