Major foreign media, including The New York Times (NYT), reported on the 26th (local time) the urgent news of the indictment and arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who faces charges of leading a rebellion.
The Associated Press (AP), NYT, The Washington Post (WP), CNN, and BBC reported that “President Yoon has become the first Korean president to be indicted while in office.”
It also detailed the investigation and trial process against President Yoon, the positions of the prosecution and President Yoon's side, and public opinion related to the case.
NYT noted, “The majority of Koreans supported his impeachment and considered him a traitor,” while “Yoon's staunch supporters called his impeachment a ‘fraud.’” It also described the situation regarding the Western District Court riot.
AP reported, “The Constitution of the Republic of Korea grants the president the authority to declare a state of martial law to maintain order during wartime or similar emergencies; however, many experts say that at the time President Yoon declared martial law, the Republic of Korea was not in such a situation.”
CNN reported, “President Yoon attempted to impose martial law in early December last year, which plunged the country into political chaos, and many recalled painful memories of authoritarian times.”
Japanese media NHK and Asahi Shimbun also quickly reported on President Yoon's indictment. Chinese state media Xinhua News also reported on the indictment and arrest of President Yoon.
