Hyundai Motor Group's robotics subsidiary, Boston Dynamics, revealed on the 20th the operation of its humanoid robot, Atlas.

The video, which lasts just over a minute and was released by Boston Dynamics on this day, showcases various movements of Atlas. It included basic actions like walking and running, as well as moving on all fours like an animal and rolling over on its shoulders. It also demonstrated the ability to flip its body around a single arm and leg. Boston Dynamics noted that Atlas can perform these motions due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) learning.

The Atlas model, which debuted in 2013, showcased jumping and performing backflips in 2017, but it appeared rigid. By 2023, it displayed the ability to move while carrying objects. Hyundai announced plans to integrate Atlas into its production processes starting in the second half of this year.

Atlas's movements result from reinforcement learning training conducted by Boston Dynamics and the Robotics and AI Institute (RAI Institute) with the goals of ▲ bridging the gap between simulation and reality ▲ enhancing manipulation capabilities during motion ▲ and exploring high-performance movement through consolidation of the whole body. Boston Dynamics established a partnership with RAI in February for the development of AI-based humanoid robots. The RAI Institute is a corporation founded by Marc Raibert, the former CEO of Boston Dynamics, in 2022.

Hyundai Motor Group acquired Boston Dynamics from SoftBank Group for approximately 1.2 trillion won in 2020. As of the end of last year, Euisun Chung, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, holds 21.27% equity, while HMG Global under Hyundai holds 53.17% and Hyundai GLOVIS holds 10.63%. The remaining 14.92% is owned by SoftBank.
