It wasn't completely incorrect, but the attitude and tone were not nice. Former skeleton national team member Yun Sung-bin ultimately left an apology regarding the 'kangaroo tribe derogatory remarks.'
Yun Sung-bin said on the 19th through his YouTube channel 'Ironbin Yun Sung-bin,' "First, I sincerely apologize to the viewers who were angered and hurt by my comments in the recently uploaded video and my subsequent responses," and added, "In the process of conveying my words, I failed to consider that my facial expressions, tone, and attitude could make it seem like I was belittling or disparaging someone.
In a previously released video, he asked a staff member, who identified as part of the kangaroo tribe, "What is the kangaroo tribe?" The staff member explained, "It means living with parents. These days, there are many people in their 30s who are part of the kangaroo tribe," to which Yun Sung-bin queried, "Why is that? Why aren’t they independent?" When the staff replied, "Because they don't have money," Yun Sung-bin questioned, "Is it because they don’t have money, or is it because they spend it freely? Why don’t they have it? Are prices too high?"
In response, the staff replied, "If you pay rent and living expenses, there’s nothing left," but Yun Sung-bin pointed out again, "Can’t you save on living expenses?" The staff explained, "If you get minimum wage, it’s 200,000 to 230,000 won. After paying rent, management fees, and monthly rent, it comes to 1 million won. Then you have to live on 130,000 won, and with food and transportation costs, you really have nearly nothing left," and Yun Sung-bin advised, "When you’re new, move back in with your parents for a while."
Following Yun Sung-bin's comments, a wave of criticism and pointed comments ensued. Since Yun Sung-bin won an Olympic gold medal at 25 years old and receives prize money and pension, along with various grants and YouTube revenue, the remarks were criticized as belittling to those who do not share similar financial circumstances.
In particular, his assertive and self-assured personality seemed to lead to a tone and manner of speech that overlooked and even dismissed the perspectives of others. As a result, some voices stated that while his comments were not incorrect, his manner of speaking was problematic.
As the video became controversial, Yun Sung-bin noted that it was not his intent to belittle: "I want to say that I absolutely had no intention of belittling or disparaging anyone. As many have pointed out, I have many areas of ignorance regarding the overall social atmosphere and various matters, and I was merely asking questions out of curiosity." He blocked the comment section and made the video private thereafter.
He continued, "Regardless of my ignorance and intent, I sincerely apologize for not reacting quickly to the current situation. I will continue to keep my shortcomings in mind and reflect on and correct them moving forward."
