KBS will showcase a broadcasting program that applies artificial intelligence (AI) technology in various ways to viewers on March 3, the 52nd anniversary of its establishment. KBS plans to utilize AI technology throughout its broadcasting programs to maximize creative content production and production efficiency.
KBS will experimentally introduce an AI anchor on its radio broadcasting channel, KBS Hanminjok Broadcasting. The AI anchor, trained on the voice of KBS announcer Kim Hee-soo, is scheduled to present the 'Hanminjok 4 p.m. News' broadcast at 4 p.m. on March 3. KBS is also pushing for plans to offer free universal services to viewers, such as 'AI standard Korean pronunciation services' and 'AI commentary broadcasts for visually impaired individuals,' starting with this AI anchor trial broadcast.
From 7:20 a.m. to 8:57 a.m. on March 3, the 'Special Current Affairs' program's 'Visible Radio,' which will be broadcast on KBS 1 Radio, will apply AI technology throughout the video shooting, editing, and transmission processes. A camera equipped with KBS's self-developed AI device, 'Vertigo', will recognize and capture the person speaking, and handle video direction by selecting and editing the captured individual's footage for transmission. Notably, an AI-PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) camera system, which can recognize participants and move the camera up, down, left, and right, will be introduced in this broadcast to reduce the workload of video direction and enhance production efficiency.
Additionally, the preview of the AI animation 'Legend of the Homeland - Gumiho', set to be broadcast on Children's Day, May 5, will air from March 3. The 'Legend of the Homeland - Gumiho' episode is a representative K-horror content that reinterprets Korean folktales and legends into a TV drama and has applied AI technology in character design, animation generation, and voice synthesis.
Opportunities will also be provided for viewers to directly experience the broadcasting AI technology. During March, KBS will operate an AI anchor experience zone at the KBS headquarters viewer square. There will be a space for direct interaction with the AI anchor developed based on the KBS announcer model, and viewers will have the opportunity to experience having the AI anchor read news articles they have written to induce interest in AI technology.
