The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 18th that it has selected Andong City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, as the '2026 East Asia Cultural City.'
Andong City, which promotes the slogan 'A place where peace resides, a place for the heart to rest,' plans to host various cultural events throughout 2026 in collaboration with cultural cities in China and Japan, including the East Asia Human Values Forum, East Asia 탈 Exhibition and Experience, Korea-China-Japan Youth Climate Crisis Response Humanities and Arts Camp, East Asia Traditional and Modern Music Exchange Festival, and East Asia Paper and Writing Biennale.
Since 2014, the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan have designated cities with unique regional cultures as 'East Asia Cultural Cities' each year to promote cultural exchange and collaborative projects.
The three countries plan to officially declare the '2026 East Asia Cultural City' at the '16th Korea-China-Japan Cultural Ministers' Meeting,' which is scheduled to be held in China this year.
Kim Hyun-jun, director of international cultural policy at the Ministry of Culture, said, 'Andong is a city rich in unique cultural and artistic content, such as Hahoe Folk Village and Dosan Seowon, and we will support it to establish itself as a hub for international cultural exchange.'
