Ange Postecoglou and Oh Hyun-kyu may reunite on the same team. The stage would be Türkiye. Attention is focusing on the possibility of a reunion as Postecoglou, who personally brought Oh Hyun-kyu to Celtic, has emerged as a candidate for Beşiktaş's next manager.
British outlet CelticCulture reported on the 27th (Korean time) that "Postecoglou could meet his former pupil from his Celtic days again this summer."
The outlet explained, "According to local reports in Türkiye, Postecoglou has been included among the candidates for Beşiktaş manager," and "if he is appointed, there is a possibility of a reunion with Oh Hyun-kyu, whom he personally signed from Suwon Samsung to Celtic in the winter of 2023."
Beşiktaş is currently conducting the process of appointing a new manager.
The club announced on the 19th that it had terminated its contract with manager Sergen Yalçın. Yalçın, who had returned to his former club, failed to produce the rebound that had been expected.
Beşiktaş finished the league in fourth place, securing a spot in European competition, but left regrets in cup competitions and the title race. Ultimately, they parted ways after one season.
Postecoglou's name has appeared as one of the candidates for the next manager.
After being dismissed by Tottenham last summer, Postecoglou immediately sought a return to the English Premier League. Nottingham Forest actively pursued him after parting ways with Nuno Espírito Santo.
But the result was disastrous. After taking charge at Nottingham, he had a shaky start with a 0-3 defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby and thereafter failed to turn the team's form around. He endured the humiliation of being sacked just 39 days after his appointment.
Postecoglou, who is currently resting, has recently been linked again with several European clubs. Among them, Beşiktaş is the club most actively mentioned.
If the appointment goes through, the player who would attract the most attention is without doubt Oh Hyun-kyu.
Oh Hyun-kyu joined Beşiktaş in the winter transfer window and quickly made a strong impression in a short time.
He recorded eight goals and two assists in 16 second-half matches, establishing himself as a key attacking player. His aggressive pressing, work rate and finishing inside the box revived, earning praise from local fans.
Above all, Postecoglou had rated Oh Hyun-kyu highly since their time at Celtic. He personally persuaded Oh Hyun-kyu, who was playing for Suwon Samsung at the time, to come to Europe.
But it is unclear whether the reunion would be long-lasting. CelticCulture cautioned that "even if Postecoglou goes to Beşiktaş, there is no guarantee that Oh Hyun-kyu will stay for long," and added that "interest from several European clubs has been growing because of his recent performances."
In fact, speculation about big clubs' interest in Oh Hyun-kyu has continued. Turkish outlet Fotomac recently reported that "Tottenham and Manchester United are monitoring Oh Hyun-kyu."
In particular, Tottenham's interest has been mentioned in connection with a possible generational change in the attack after Son Heung-min.
The outlet said, "Tottenham is closely watching Oh Hyun-kyu's development and a transfer negotiation is possible," and "there are reports that the player himself is responding positively to the possibility of a move."
There have also been claims that Manchester United is considering Oh Hyun-kyu as one of the candidates to bolster its striker options.
Oh Hyun-kyu is currently under contract with Beşiktaş until June 2029. Beşiktaş already rates his potential market value growth highly and appears confident about future transfer fee negotiations.
Ultimately, whether Postecoglou is appointed could have a significant impact on Oh Hyun-kyu's future.
He could resume his development with the manager who first introduced him to European football at Celtic. Conversely, under a Postecoglou regime he could deliver more explosive performances and then make a leap to an EPL big club.
