Tottenham Hotspur is on the verge of making its first signing under coach Roberto De Zerbi. 'Liverpool legend' Andy Robertson (32) decided to turn down Juventus' offer and join Tottenham.
European football transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano said on his personal social media on the 28th (Korean time), "Tottenham has reached a verbal agreement to sign Robertson," and shouted his signature line "Here we go!"
Romano explained, "Juventus sent an offer in an attempt to hijack the deal (for Robertson), but the existing agreement with Tottenham is expected to be respected. The contract should be signed soon. Robertson was also linked with Tottenham in January, and De Zerbi's regime wants him again. It's finally happening!"
The British BBC also reported, "Robertson is close to joining Tottenham after leaving Liverpool. Tottenham will be Robertson's third club in England after Hull City and Liverpool," adding, "Contract details are still being finalized, but a principle agreement has been reached."
Born in 1994, Robertson was one of the leading figures of Liverpool's golden era. After leaving Hull City in 2017 to join Liverpool, he played a total of 378 matches, scoring 14 goals and providing 69 assists. In addition, he built a brilliant career including two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, and one UEFA Champions League title.
But the day came for Robertson to leave Liverpool. As his opportunities narrowed with age, he announced he would end his nine-year stint with Liverpool at the end of this season, and he played his last match for Liverpool in the recent game against Brentford. Robertson, along with another legend Mohamed Salah, left Anfield at the end of his contract.
Tottenham wanted Robertson in the January transfer window as well. Robertson can still serve as an excellent backup and bring to the team the vast experience and winning mentality he accumulated while lifting numerous trophies. With Cristian Romero, who took over the captain's armband from Son Heung-min, causing problems, the team needs a player to fill the leadership void.
At the time Robertson wanted to move to Tottenham and a club agreement with Liverpool had even been reached. However, the move ultimately collapsed because Liverpool could not recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.
But that only delayed the inevitable farewell by half a year. Robertson left Liverpool without a new contract, and Tottenham, having narrowly avoided relegation, will sign him under the terms agreed midseason. Juventus' hijacking attempt was of no use.
Tottenham narrowly secured Premier League survival by defeating Everton 1-0 in the final match of the 2025-2026 season. They finished the season in 17th place with 10 wins, 11 draws and 17 losses, accumulating 41 points. Their fate was decided by a margin of just two points from 18th-place West Ham (39 points), who were relegated to the Championship (second division).
However, having finished 17th for two consecutive seasons, strengthening the squad is urgent. De Zerbi said, "Tottenham already has 10, 11, 12 good players. But I want to add top-level players," adding, "We must learn from mistakes and start rebuilding the team tonight. From tomorrow. Not in 10 days. There's no time for a holiday," signaling further signings.
Now Robertson's signing is expected to be the first signal. Britain's GiveMeSport said, "This summer's transfer window is an opportunity for Tottenham to accelerate rebuilding and make a fresh leap forward, because there is no room for another relegation battle," adding, "Many players are expected to leave, which also means many new signings will come. It will be Tottenham's busiest transfer market in history."
