Son Heung-min (34, LAFC) spoke candidly about his family and his future. Having spent a long time focused solely on football, he is now gradually thinking about life after his playing career. However, he clearly said he has no intention of personally teaching his child football.
US Magazine in the United States reported on the 21st (Korea time) that Son Heung-min, who plays for LAFC, revealed his thoughts on family and life plans through an interview as Hyundai Motor global brand ambassador.
In the interview Son Heung-min said it now seems like the time to start a family and think about a stable life.
He added that he has always really liked children and that he himself is curious about what changes the future might bring.
The atmosphere is a little different from the past.
Son Heung-min has consistently said throughout his playing career that football would be his top priority. In fact, in previous interviews he said that after marriage football would be unlikely to be the top priority of his life and indicated he planned to concentrate on football during his active career.
Now entering his mid-30s, his thinking appears to have changed.
Football still remains at the center of his life. However, as a player he has naturally begun to consider balancing responsibility and his personal life. He was particularly firm when asked about raising children.
Son Heung-min laughed and said he does not think he will personally teach his child football. He added that he wants to be a good father and a dad who takes good care of his child.
In the process, the conversation naturally turned to his father, coach Son Woong-jung.
Son Heung-min is famous for having received intense individual training from his father during his childhood.
He recalled that looking back now, all those memories remain good. Because his father was a former player, he trained him very strictly. He trained almost every day.
He said that at the time it was hard, but the time spent with his father itself is a happy memory, adding that on most days he was scolded for not meeting expectations but that in the end the process made him who he is today.
He also left a message for younger generations. Son Heung-min said he hopes children go outside and enjoy playing football itself, noting that sometimes the desire to do too well makes them forget the fun. He said he wants the next generation of players to play happily.
Finally, he did not leave out talk of the World Cup.
Son Heung-min laughed and said he hopes people will be sure to watch the World Cup, because if they miss it they will have to wait another four years.
He expressed his determination, saying the national team has many very good young players and that they will prepare well to show performances that meet fans' expectations.
