Kylian Mbappé's future is unsettled. Even after joining Real Madrid, he has not delivered the expected titles, and speculation has arisen that he could move to Chelsea. There is a prospect of reuniting with coach Xabi Alonso.
British outlet SportsBible reported on the 20th (Korean time), "Mbappé has received a brutal reaction from fans. A petition demanding his departure has even appeared. He may be ready to leave Real Madrid."
Mbappé left Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) ahead of the 2024-2025 season and joined Real Madrid on a free transfer. Expectations were high because the club acquired the world's best forward without a transfer fee. His individual numbers were not bad. Mbappé scored 85 goals for Real Madrid over the past two seasons.
The problem was the team's results. Real Madrid failed to win LaLiga and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League (UCL) for two consecutive seasons. Separate from Mbappé's individual scoring, the whole team fell short of expectations and he became the focus of criticism.
There were controversies off the field as well. Mbappé drew fans' anger after it was reported he traveled during an injury period. After his return he was also involved in a "greeting pass" controversy with Jude Bellingham. With poor performance and internal atmosphere issues piling up, fans' views turned colder.
SportsBible reported, "Real Madrid is in complete chaos. Jose Mourinho could return as coach. Mbappé is said to want to leave." It added, "But there are only a few teams that can sign him."
Realistic destinations are limited. The outlet said Bayern Munich could be a candidate, but the possibility is low because Harry Kane is there. A return to PSG is also not an easy option. Ultimately, the English Premier League (EPL) was mentioned as the most likely stage.
Among them, Chelsea emerged as the frontrunner. SportsBible explained, "The team that has emerged as the current front-runner to sign Mbappé is Chelsea. Reports say coach Alonso, who publicly supported him at Real Madrid, wants to sign him."
The connection with coach Alonso is also a variable. Real Madrid handed the reins to Alonso ahead of this season, but he did not achieve the expected results. They parted ways during the season, and Alvaro Arbeloa took charge of the team. Alonso is reportedly now taking the Chelsea job and preparing for the new season.
Mbappé showed a better flow under Alonso's system. According to the outlet, Mbappé scored 30 goals in 28 matches during Alonso's tenure. After Arbeloa took over, he managed 12 goals in 18 matches. Still respectable numbers, but there was a difference compared with the explosiveness of Alonso's period.
There were reports that Mbappé expressed dissatisfaction at Alonso's departure. Because of this, if Chelsea actually makes a move, the possibility of a reunion between the two would inevitably draw greater attention.
Of course, a Mbappé transfer would not be easy. Salary, contract terms and Real Madrid's willingness would all have to align. But with growing fan discontent and Real Madrid's internal instability, it is hard to rule it out. Whether Real Madrid will keep Mbappé or Chelsea will jump into a blockbuster signing race has emerged as a key variable in the summer transfer market.
