Trevor Bauer (35), who plays for the Long Island Ducks of the U.S. independent Atlantic League, broke the franchise record for most strikeouts in a single game.
Bauer started against the Gastonia Ghost PepperS at Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip, New York, on the 13th (Korean time), going eight innings, allowing five hits (two home runs), one walk, striking out 15, allowing three runs (two earned) to record the win.
In an official press release, the Long Island Ducks said, "Bauer once again delivered dominant pitching from the Ducks' mound. He became the first pitcher in the team's 26-year history to record 15 strikeouts in a single game. The previous record was 14 strikeouts, recorded by Mike Lowry in 2011, Rich Hill in 2015, Tim Melville in 2017 and Bennett Perry in 2018," announcing Bauer's new record.
Bauer is a right-handed ace with 222 major league appearances (1,297 2/3 innings), 83 wins, 69 losses and a 3.79 earned run average. In the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19, he was with the Cincinnati Reds and went 5-4 with a 1.73 ERA in 11 starts (73 innings), winning the National League Cy Young Award.
After the 2020 season he signed a three-year, $102 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and went 8-5 with a 2.59 ERA in 17 starts (107 2/3 innings) for the Dodgers. However, in June 2021 he was embroiled in a sexual assault controversy and was placed on administrative leave. He was initially suspended for 324 games by Major League Baseball, later reduced to 194 games, but the Dodgers decided to release him.
After being released by the Dodgers, Bauer was unable to find a team and did not play in competitive games through 2022. He continued his career with the Yokohama BayStars in Nippon Professional Baseball in 2023, with Diablos Rojos del México in the Mexican League in 2024, and again with Yokohama in 2025, but ultimately did not receive a call back to the major leagues.
Bauer, who is making a final challenge in the U.S. independent league, has been showing dominant performance. On the 27th of last month he threw a seven-inning no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader, and in this game he broke the club's strikeout record. Of the 15 strikeouts, 11 were swinging strikeouts. He also recorded five consecutive strikeouts to start the game. The league record is 17 strikeouts, set by Dustin Knight in 2019.<
