Korea falls short of Mexico.
The national soccer team led by coach Hong Myung-bo was placed in Group A with Mexico, South Africa and the Czech Republic at the CONCACAF World Cup opening in June. Korea is set to face host nation Mexico in a once-in-a-generation clash.
Foreign media have rated Korea's strength low. ESPN gave a cold assessment, saying, "Korea is a tricky team but not a top-tier force. Korea went unbeaten through Asian qualifying, but compared with past Korean national teams, the talent is inferior."
It is hard to accept the claim that Korea, with Son Heung-min, Kim Min-jae and Lee Kang-in, lacks talent. However, it is true that ace Son Heung-min's prime years are behind him.
ESPN noted an interesting setup: "The most notable match is the showdown between Mexico and Korea. For Mexico, enjoying home advantage, it will be a turning point. The 'generation clash' between Son Heung-min and Santiago Giménez draws attention. Both players are strikers aiming to bounce back after disappointing seasons."
The final ranking forecast was also cold. ESPN's Gabriel Marcotti predicted Group A would finish: 1. Mexico, 2. Korea, 3. the Czech Republic, 4. South Africa.
ESPN said Korea remains a competitive team but did not view it as an "overwhelming force" capable of turning the tables.
