Manchester United is preparing a veteran big hit.
British outlet GiveMeSport reported on the 27th (Korean time) that Manchester United is preparing a major squad overhaul in the summer transfer window, and that Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski is being mentioned as one of the candidates to reinforce the attack.
United's problem is clear: the attack. With the club increasing its chances of qualifying for next season's Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League, it needs to add more heft to the squad. In particular, it needs a player who can reliably finish at the forefront. Lewandowski, who has the name recognition, experience and decisiveness, is why he is among the candidates.
Lewandowski is a striker who needs no introduction. At Borussia Dortmund he rose to the top level of the Bundesliga, scoring 103 goals and providing 42 assists in 187 matches. At Bayern Munich he became a complete monster. In eight seasons he played 375 matches, scoring 344 goals and providing 73 assists. The numbers alone are overwhelming. He was a leading figure of Munich's golden era and one of Europe's best goal scorers.
His class did not disappear after moving to Barcelona. He moved to Spain ahead of the 2022-2023 season and proved his continued quality by scoring 33 goals in official matches in his first season. This season he has 17 goals in 41 official matches, including 12 in the league. He is not as explosively prolific every match like in his prime, but his movement inside the box and his finishing ability remain threatening.
The contract situation is another point that could interest United. Multiple British media outlets have mentioned the possibility that Lewandowski could become a free agent after this season. If he can be brought in without a transfer fee, it is a card United could reasonably consider. The player himself is said to want to extend his career and is open to a new challenge.
Of course there are risks. Lewandowski is no longer a striker with the explosive power of his prime. His age makes him less suitable as the center of a long-term project. But if United wants not a five-year future but the experience and goals to change a season immediately, the story is different. Limited playing time, a clear role, finishing inside the box. Under those conditions, Lewandowski remains an attractive option.
The possibility of changes to United's attack is also a variable. With Joshua Zirkzee's future uncertain, securing a replacement could be an unavoidable task. While several names have been mentioned and he has been linked with Oh Hyun-gyu, Lewandowski is considered a much more stable choice in terms of experience and immediate impact.
In the end, United's choice comes down to direction. Will they develop a young attacker, or will they raise immediate completeness with a veteran's single impact? His prime is over, but his scoring instinct remains. Interest is focused on whether Lewandowski can become Old Trafford's new solution.
