Seongnam FC made a choice to reinforce the identity of its youth system. By putting a coach who grew up within the club at the forefront, it signals an intention to clarify the club's colors even more.
Seongnam FC announced on the 30th that it had appointed Kim Tae-yun, the head coach who led U18 Pungsaeng High School, as the official manager. This personnel move is a decision to minimize the vacancy created when former manager Kim Geun-chul moved to the role of head coach for the U20 national team and to secure continuity in team operations.
Manager Kim Tae-yun is considered a representative example raised by Seongnam's youth system. After graduating from Pungsaeng High School, he debuted professionally with Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, and later continued his career with experiences at Incheon United and in the Thai league. Returning to Seongnam and playing as a player, he naturally continued his relationship with the club as a coach. It is significant that he is a "local-born coach" who has experienced the field comprehensively.
Through this appointment, the club presented a direction beyond a simple personnel change. The plan is to firmly instill Seongnam's philosophy and colors from the youth stages. It reflects trust in the development system Seongnam has built over a long period.
The composition of the coaching staff is notable. Figures who were part of Seongnam's heyday are taking central roles. Coach Yoon Young-sun was promoted to head coach. He is a former defender who experienced major achievements at Seongnam, including ACL victory and FA Cup triumph. In particular, his selection for the 2018 Russia World Cup squad and contribution to the victory over Germany remain a symbolic moment.
Joining the coaching staff newly is coach Seo Bo-min, adding weight to the coaching team. Coach Seo was a long-time captain at Seongnam and a leader who led the team. He was a central figure when the team achieved promotion to K League 1 in the 2018 season. Expectations are high because he is a resource with both field experience and leadership.
Manager Kim Tae-yun has already proven results in the acting role. He achieved an undefeated championship at the Gyeonggi-do Dream Tree tournament and led the team to victory in the Gyeonggi-do representative selection for the National Sports Festival, guiding the team stably. Although short-term, he is evaluated as having shown competitiveness in both results and substance.
Seongnam expects significant synergy when Manager Kim's tactical preparation is combined with the experience of the legendary coaching staff. The plan is to pursue two goals simultaneously: player development and establishment of team identity, beyond simply match results.
CEO Jang Won-jae highly praised Manager Kim's internal understanding and achievements during the acting period, expressing expectations that youth players will learn not only skills but also Seongnam's distinctive fighting spirit and sense of responsibility.
Manager Kim Tae-yun also emphasized responsibility. He mentioned his progression—growing through Seongnam's youth system, advancing to the professional stage, and returning as a coach—highlighting the consolidation with the club. He added that his priority is the individual growth of each player and that his goal is to develop resources who can compete on the professional stage.
Seongnam FC has completed the U18 team's coaching staff composition with this appointment. With a structure centered on legendary former players-turned-coaches, Seongnam will begin full-scale preparations for various competitions, including the Korea Football Association (KFA) president's cup scheduled for May.
