"If you fall back, it's over."
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand (48) issued a strong warning to Arsenal. He said that if they play defensively in next week's showdown with Manchester City, their title challenge could end as well.
Arsenal will play Manchester City on the 20th (all times KST) in a match that could be the turning point in the Premier League title race. Arsenal currently lead the table, but Man City beat Chelsea 3-0 to cut the gap to six points. They have played one fewer game. In effect, it is a six-point match.
The British Daily Mail on the 13th reported, "Ferdinand issued a strong warning to Mikel Arteta (44). He said if Arsenal fall back at Man City they will suffer heavily."
Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel, "If Arsenal go to Man City and sit back and defend like Liverpool did recently against PSG, it's over. They will get battered."
He added, "Have you ever seen a team win the title that way? Never."
In fact, Arsenal have defended solidly this season to stay top. Man City are the league's highest-scoring team. Ferdinand thinks that if Arsenal simply sit deep like this, Man City will easily break them down.
He instead found a hint in the Bournemouth match. Arsenal lost to Bournemouth on the 12th. Ferdinand explained, "Bournemouth didn't press up as high as Man City. Instead they perfectly cut off passing lanes. They forced Arsenal into long balls or panicked turnovers."
He added, "Maybe that's the solution. Bournemouth shook Arsenal in their own way. Arteta and his players have not yet found that answer."
He also said, "Arsenal's performance itself was not good. At minimum they should have been more physical and put pressure on some players."
Man City are entering their most dangerous period. Manager Pep Guardiola is adept at getting his team firing toward the end of each season. This time is no different. Man City recently beat Chelsea 3-0 to raise morale to the highest level.
Guardiola did not hide his confidence. He said, "The club and the players gave me hunger and mentality. I push the players and the players push me. If you are competing for the title in the final month and a half, it means you are a really good team."
He added, "The Arsenal match is a final for us. The mentality the players showed in the second half against Chelsea was remarkable. In this period, mentality matters more than tactics."
The Daily Mail noted, "Man City can spend the week preparing only for the Arsenal match. Meanwhile, Arsenal must immediately travel to Man City after playing Sporting in the midweek Champions League quarterfinal second leg."
It is an uneasy situation for Arsenal. They cannot sit any deeper. At the same time, it would be risky to go all out. Depending on what choice they make at the Etihad next week, Arsenal's title dream will be decided.
