Toronto Blue Jays' starting catcher Alejandro Kirk will eventually undergo surgery.
According to Canadian outlet Sportsnet, manager John Schneider said on the 7th (KST) "Kirk is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday for a fractured left thumb, and a return timetable will be determined after the surgery."
Kirk was injured when a foul tip struck the back of his left hand behind his catcher's mitt while fielding in the 10th inning of the game against the Chicago White Sox on the 5th. In the process his thumb was dislocated and a fracture near the joint reportedly occurred. Toronto placed Kirk on the 10-day injured list on the 6th and called up rookie catcher Brandon Valenzuela from Triple-A Buffalo.
Kirk, in his seventh major league season, was named to his second career All-Star team in 2025 and posted a 0.769 OPS and 15 home runs in 130 games. This season Kirk was hitting .150 with a .227 on-base percentage, a .350 slugging percentage and one home run in five games.
Meanwhile, Schneider said of Ponce, "Starting pitcher Cody Ponce, who is injured, will meet medical staff in Los Angeles to determine the future treatment direction for his knee. We expect an update on his condition soon."
Ponce started on the 31st of last month against Colorado, making his first major league appearance in five years as a starting pitcher. He had scoreless outings through two innings. But in the third inning he suffered a right knee injury while fielding a ground ball and was removed. After examination he was diagnosed with a right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Trey Yesavage, who is recovering from shoulder impingement syndrome, made his first rehab start in Dunedin. Facing the Pittsburgh Pirates' affiliated Bradenton Marauders, he went 2⅔ innings, allowing one hit (an inside-the-park home run), one run, with three strikeouts and one walk. Of his 44 pitches, 30 were strikes.
With this outing the 30-day count that determines Yesavage's major league return window has begun, but the club does not expect that much time will be needed. Yesavage is scheduled to make another Single-A rehab start Thursday with the Dunedin Blue Jays.
Injured pitchers José Berríos, Alejandro García and Shane Bieber are all scheduled to throw bullpen sessions Tuesday, and Patrick Corbin will also take the mound. The Blue Jays and Corbin are still discussing the timing and location of his next start.
