Ahead of the 2026 CONCACAF World Cup, national team kits unveiled have been ranked by fans, and South Korea's national team home kit has made its presence known by placing in the upper tier.
Footy Headlines announced on the 25th (Korea time) the results of a fan vote on 2026 World Cup participant kits released by Nike, Adidas and Puma. With a total of 48 countries competing, South Korea's home kit ranked seventh overall and received a respectable evaluation.
The newly unveiled national team kits conveyed a clear message starting from their design concept. The home kit used the white tiger, a symbolic figure of Korea, as a motif to visually express team unity, resilience and an explosiveness in attack at decisive moments. While based on the traditional red, a tiger camouflage pattern was applied to emphasize dynamism, and a custom typeface that modernizes traditional calligraphic sensibilities was added to sharpen the team's identity.
Overall, the home kit was evaluated as having a stable design and succeeded in entering the top ranks. Analysts said that staying largely within the traditional red base while introducing changes through details worked positively.
By contrast, reactions to the away kit were mixed. Under a concept expressing the energy and explosiveness of a flower blooming, a violet color was brought to the forefront, but some fans showed rejection of the bold color and pattern. In particular, criticism was strong in some quarters over the unfamiliar design, resulting in a stark divide in preferences.
In the rankings, Japan's away kit finished one spot higher than South Korea's in sixth place, creating a comparison. Japan used a horizon motif where sky and sea meet to apply a 12-color stripe pattern and was recognized for design completeness by incorporating a message symbolizing 11 players and the fans.
The top kit went to Curaçao's away kit, marking the first time the nation has reached the World Cup finals. A pale yellow base and the color combination on the shoulder lines left a strong impression. South Africa's away kit and Spain's away kit followed, and Germany's and Norway's home kits were also included in the top ranks. Alongside South Korea, Mexico's third kit, France's away kit and Argentina's away kit also received good evaluations.
Conversely, among the worst kits, many goalkeeper kits were included. Saudi Arabia's goalkeeper away kit was chosen as the worst for its monotonous design, followed by goalkeeper kits from Croatia and Uruguay. Croatia's field player kit also landed in the lower ranks and could not avoid harsh criticism.
The national team will debut the new kit in an actual match. The team led by coach Hong Myung-bo will wear the home kit and make the first appearance in a friendly against Côte d'Ivoire at MK Dons Stadium in Milton Keynes, England, at 11 p.m. on the 28th. Amid varied evaluations of the design, attention is focusing on what impression it will leave in an actual match.
