Jeonbuk Hyundai proved the mettle of a defending champion by not missing decisive moments.
Jeonbuk Hyundai beat Daejeon Hana Citizen 1-0 on the 21st at Daejeon World Cup Stadium in the Hana Bank K League 1 2026 round 5. With Lee Dong-jun's winning goal, Jeonbuk recorded a second straight win to reach eight points and rose to third place.
Jeonbuk took an aggressive approach from the start of the match. They dominated the flow with strong forward pressure and quick wing play, and in the 14th minute of the first half opened the scoring chance with Kim Seung-seop's shot. Although it did not lead to a goal, it was enough to seize control of the match.
Daejeon did not back down easily. In the 20th minute of the first half they countered with Kim Bong-soo's header, and in the ensuing corner kick situation Ju Min-kyu's shot struck Kim Young-bin's hand, leading to a VAR review. However, the decision was not overturned, and Jeonbuk survived the crisis.
After regaining momentum, Jeonbuk increased the intensity of their attack. Kim Jin-kyu and Motta attempted shots in succession to pressure Daejeon, and finally broke the deadlock just before the end of the first half. Receiving Motta's headed pass, Lee Dong-jun shrugged off defenders and calmly finished to score the opening goal.
The second half began with Daejeon's counterattack. Daejeon, which had looked frustrated in the first-half attack, brought on Diogo to try to change things, and with aerial play and physical attacks they troubled Jeonbuk. They succeeded in raising possession and gaining control of the match, but left something to be desired in decisive finishing.
Daejeon continued to increase attacking numbers to seek an equalizer. After bringing on Eom Won-sang and Masa, they also introduced Yoo Kang-hyun to add weight up front. However, Jeonbuk's defense did not waver. They dropped their line and responded systematically, effectively cutting off the opponent's crosses and passes.
Jeonbuk maintained the lead until the end on the basis of defensive concentration. In attack they took advantage of one opportunity, and in defense they withstood the opponent's offense to complete the victory.
In the end, what decided the match was efficiency and concentration. While Daejeon controlled the flow but failed to make a goal, Jeonbuk did not miss the decisive moment.
