Jesse Lingard (free agent)'s choice once again defied expectations. It was neither a return to Europe nor a move to the U.S. It was Brazil.
The BBC reported on Jan. 28 (Korea time) that former Manchester United player Lingard was in negotiations to sign a one-year contract with Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians. Lingard, who is a free agent, received offers from multiple clubs in Europe and the U.S., but for now Corinthians appears to be the most likely scenario.
ESPN Brazil also reported that negotiations had entered the final stages. Adjustments to complete administrative procedures were ongoing, and there was a sense that the contract signing was imminent. Brazilian outlet Globo added that the Corinthians board planned to share the negotiation status with coach Dorival Júnior and other coaching staff.
Lingard's move to South America is as startling as when he took the FC Seoul jersey in Feb. 2024. The attacking midfielder, who helped England reach the semifinals in the 2018 World Cup and played for Manchester United and West Ham United, surprised the world of football when he chose the K League.
His time in Seoul was by no means a journey that relied solely on his name. In the 2024 season he led the team to elite qualification for the AFC Champions League with 6 goals and 3 assists in 26 league matches, and in the 2025 season he wore the captain's armband and recorded 10 goals and 3 assists in 34 league matches and 2 goals and 3 assists in 4 ACL matches. Over two seasons he totaled 67 matches, 19 goals and 10 assists. He proved both performance and leadership.
Although the contract included a one-year extension option, Seoul respected Lingard's wish to seek a new challenge. Lingard also left a farewell, remembering his time with Seoul and in Korea as a special experience.
However, the time after their parting was long. He was linked to Feyenoord, West Ham and Wolverhampton, but none of those talks materialized into a concrete contract. He spent nearly three months without a club, remaining a free agent.
Coach Kim Ki-dong also expressed regret. At the K League 1 media day he mentioned the last meal with Lingard and conveyed Lingard's confidence that he would quickly find a team in Europe. But reality was not so easy.
In the end Lingard chose another challenge. Memphis Depay, who played with him during his Manchester United days, is at Corinthians. The two players, who spent the 2015-2016 season together, are now likely to reunite on the Brazilian stage about 10 years later.
From Britain to Korea and now to Brazil. Lingard's career is far from the typical trajectory of a European star. Yet he is expanding his stage in his own way. Attention is focused on whether he can once again prove his value in a new environment.
