Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich)'s situation is not looking good. As his standing at Bayern Munich has been shaken, the possibility of consolidation with Premier League clubs has resurfaced.
Kim Min-jae has recently been mentioned alongside Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Football Insider on the 23rd (Korean time) said, "Tottenham is preparing in case key assets move to other teams," and added, "Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are players with a high possibility of leaving."
It added, "With center back identified as a reinforcement position ahead of the summer transfer window, Tottenham has put top-tier players on their list," and explained, "They are watching Kim Min-jae with interest, who may leave Bayern Munich due to lack of playing time. Chelsea is also among the teams seeking to sign him."
Despite Achilles and back injuries last season, Kim Min-jae earned the trust of coach Vincent Kompany and started as a first-choice center back. But this season the flow has completely changed. Jonathan Tah, who joined in the summer transfer window, quickly secured his place and formed the starting pairing with Dayot Upamecano.
Local German evaluations were also cold. Bavarian Football Works reviewed first-half performances and gave Kim Min-jae a 4 out of 10. The outlet assessed, "He has not been starting this season, and even when he has appeared, it was not a performance worthy of opportunities."
The club's internal view is not much different. German outlet FCB Inside reported, "Kim Min-jae is classified internally by the club as a 'third-choice option.' That is a reasonable role in terms of team strength and structure."
In fact, Kim Min-jae experienced exclusion from the squad for the first time this season. Bayern Munich left Kim Min-jae out of the squad for the 2025-26 Bundesliga round 21 match against Hoffenheim on the 9th. The shock was greater because there were no injury or disciplinary reasons. In that match, his spot was taken by Japanese defender Ito Hiroki.
The outlook is not bright. With Upamecano extending his contract through June 2030, the center back competition is likely to be maintained for the time being. For Kim Min-jae to produce a turnaround, he needs to leave a clear impression in limited playing opportunities.
There was also a troubling moment in the match action. Kim Min-jae started the Bundesliga round 23 match against Frankfurt on the 21st, but in the 41st minute of the second half he allowed a sequence in the buildup from the back that led to a goal. While handling Joshua Kimmich's pass, the ball struck Arnaud Kalimuendo and went straight into the net.
Local fans' reactions were also unfavorable. Bavarian Football Works reported fan opinion, asking, "Opinions on Kim Min-jae are divided. Do you think he should remain at Bayern Munich after this season ends? How do you view his performance this season?"
Many responses leaned toward selling him. Opinions included, "They should sell Kim Min-jae. He is too slow and sloppy. Jonathan Tah has shown he is better," and reactions continued, "Kim Min-jae should return to Korea and join a K-pop group. Munich should quickly sell him and bring in talented players." Some fans used excessive expressions and poured strong criticism.
