"I came to this team to play 90 minutes."
Chung Jung-yong's Jeonbuk Hyundai beat Daejeon Hana Citizen 2-0 on the 21st at Jeonju World Cup Stadium to win the Coupang Play K League Super Cup 2026.
Jeonbuk took control with Motta's opening goal in the 32nd minute of the first half and Thiago's header in the 22nd minute of the second half, and completed a clean-sheet victory with Song Beom-geun's penalty-kick save in stoppage time.
Jeonbuk, crowned at the Super Cup resurrected after 20 years, lifted the trophy in Chung Jung-yong's first official match in charge, signaling the start of the season.
In this match, Lee Seung-woo started on the bench. Lee Seung-woo, who was brought on in the 23rd minute of the second half for Lee Dong-jun, seized the ball in stoppage time through active forward pressing and, with a solo run that broke down Daejeon's defense, set up a shooting chance for Jin Tae-ho.
Before the match, Chung Jung-yong said about how he would use Lee Seung-woo, "Seung-woo is a player I've watched since he was young. He's a talent with both stardom and ability," adding, "He also played a good role as a substitute last season. I plan to use him according to the situation."
After the match, I met Lee Seung-woo. Lee Seung-woo said, "There are many new players and many changes in the team. Daejeon has kept many of its players. I thought it wouldn't be easy, but we overcame the difficulties well. It's a pleasant start," expressing his thoughts on the victory.
Below is a Q&A with Lee Seung-woo.
Chung Jung-yong's first official match with Jeonbuk. How was the atmosphere of the game?
There are many new players and the team has changed. I thought it wouldn't be easy because Daejeon has kept many of its existing players, but we overcame the early difficulties well. With the first goal, it seems we got off to a good start.
I heard there were position and tactical changes during the training camp. What did you feel directly?
With the formation change, I thought a lot about my role. Rather than having many special conversations with the coach, I mainly want to show good performances on the pitch. This year I want to focus on that part.
What prompted you to change your number from 11 to 10?
There was no special reason. With (Song) Min-gyu, who had been with the team for a long time, leaving, the number 10 became available and I naturally chose it.
You gave a decisive pass to Jin Tae-ho late in the game, but it didn't result in a goal. Weren't you disappointed?
I was disappointed and Tae-ho was disappointed too. Still, I think I owe him a meal.
What is the effect of having a coach who knows you well?
There are good points and pressures. The coach has watched me since I was young, but 10 years have passed and we've both changed a lot. It feels like meeting anew.
How about playing as a two-striker or centrally today?
Whether on the wing or in the center, it's not much different. I played several positions last year, so it feels similar now.
The coach seems to expect you to play a 'game changer' role.
I haven't heard anything specifically. I didn't come just to play as a "game changer." Of course I want to play 90 minutes, and I'm training and working hard to do that.
