Superstar Son Heung-min (34, LAFC) vs. soccer god Lionel Messi (39, Inter Miami) drew massive attention in their first-ever meeting.
LAFC defeated Inter Miami 3-0 in an MLS match held at the LA Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, USA. A total of 75,673 spectators attended the match, setting the club's record for most home attendance in LAFC history. MLS headquarters called it "the match that drew the largest global attendance this weekend."
Before the match the focus was unquestionably on the showdown between Son Heung-min and Lionel Messi. The meeting of two superstars who spent their primes in Europe was their third overall. The previous two encounters occurred in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League group stage, where Messi held the edge with two goals in two matches. Son recorded one assist.
This time was different. Son Heung-min celebrated first. In the 37th minute of the first half he opened the scoring by assisting David Martinez's lead goal. Later, Denis Bouanga (73rd minute) and Nathan Ordaz (stoppage time) scored consecutive goals to secure a comprehensive victory for LAFC. With this win Son evened his head-to-head record with Messi at one win, one draw and one loss. Above all, it left the symbolic mark of his "first win against Messi."
The match showed a surprising divergence between possession and outcome. Inter Miami dominated possession with 68.4% but LAFC posed the greater practical threat.
