Seoul Samsung Thunders basketball team has selected Yoon Ji-won and Yoon Ji-hoon (Gyeongbok High School 2) as recipients of the 26th Kim Hyun-joon basketball scholarship.
The selected recipients will each receive a scholarship of 2.4 million won and a commemorative plaque. The scholarship presentation will take place during halftime of the game against Wonju DB Promy on Feb. 7 (Sat) at 4:30 p.m., and Kim Se-hee, the eldest daughter of the late coach Kim Hyun-joon, will present the awards.
In addition to the scholarship, the recipients will receive an in-depth health checkup and injury prevention analysis from Cheong Hospital, the club's official medical partner; training suits, running shoes, backpacks and other various training equipment from Reebok, the club's equipment sponsor; and they will visit STC to meet the team and receive education on various injury-prevention training.
The "Kim Hyun-joon basketball scholarship" is held to honor the late man who led the development of Korean basketball and to support promising young basketball prospects. This is the 26th time it has been held, and since 2000 the team has set aside a fixed amount per team victory to provide scholarships totaling 176.7 million won to 81 people. Starting with the 11th scholarship in 2011, the pool of eligible candidates was expanded from the Seoul metropolitan area to nationwide, and recipients have been selected through screening based on coaches' recommendations and records from various competitions.
Meanwhile, among past recipients, including Lee Kwan-hee, Han Ho-bin, Park Jin-chul, Park Seung-jae and Lee Kyu-tae of Seoul Samsung Thunders, players such as Lee Seung-hyun, Seo Myung-jin (Ulsan Hyundai Mobis), Kim Nak-hyun (Seoul SK), Choi Jun-Yong, Song Kyo-chang (Busan KCC), Byun Jun-hyung, Moon Yoo-hyun (Anyang Jeong Kwan Jang), Yang Hong-seok, Yang Joon-seok (Changwon LG), Moon Jung-hyun (Suwon KT), Yang Woo-hyuk (Daegu Korea Gas Corporation) and others have grown into players representing the KBL and patrol the court.
