A night of an away victory in Europe produced a scene more intense than joy. The protagonists were Unai Emery (55) and his players.
The British Daily Mail reported on the 23rd (Korea time) a clash that occurred immediately after Aston Villa's Europa League victory.
Villa secured advancement to the round of 16 by beating Fenerbahçe 1-0 in a UEFA Europa League match held that day in Istanbul, Türkiye.
The controversial scene occurred in the 44th minute of the second half, just before the end of the match, during a substitution. Emery substituted Youri Tielemans, who was on a yellow card. Tielemans lightly embraced the incoming substitute, Jacob Ramsey, as he headed to the bench, and naturally extended his hand toward the manager.
Emery's reaction was different from expectations. With an already agitated expression, Emery ignored Tielemans's hand, swung his arm widely while shouting, and was even captured on camera pushing him toward the bench. The scene on the touchline quickly spread online.
Fortunately the situation did not escalate. Tielemans moved to the bench without reacting, and it did not lead to a physical altercation. It is not clear what made Emery so angry. Some speculate it was because Tielemans had already been booked, or because of a delay during the substitution process.
When asked about the scene after the match, Emery replied briefly. The manager said, "He is my son. My son." He did not expand on the meaning and moved on.
Later Emery left only a brief message on his personal social media: "We secured advancement to the round of 16 with a valuable win on a difficult away trip. I am proud of all the players' commitment," and avoided mentioning the clash.
Meanwhile, the match's winning goal was provided by Jadon Sancho. Sancho's header in the 25th minute of the first half decided the outcome. Villa accumulated 18 points in the Europa League group stage with this win, maintaining an impressive record of 6 wins and 1 loss in 7 matches.
Aston Villa is cruising on the European stage. But the tension captured between the manager and a player in the shadow of victory left another topic of conversation.
