Is Lee Kang-in's (24) next step at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) entry into the English Premier League (EPL)?
French media outlet 'Foot 01' reported on the 13th (Korea time) that "Lee is drifting away from the plans of PSG coach Luis Enrique as the season progresses. There is a very high possibility that he will leave the team in the next transfer market," noting that "wealthy clubs are competing for Lee. He is attracting the interest of EPL clubs. PSG is also welcoming this atmosphere."
Lee transferred to PSG from Mallorca for about 20 million euros (32.5 billion won) in July 2023. In the initial stages of his arrival, he received positive evaluations for his versatility and technique. However, he has not established himself as a solid regular. With a lack of consistent playing opportunities, his position this season has been shaky.
In the meantime, reports have emerged that the EPL is a strong candidate for his next destination. According to 'Foot 01,' teams interested in Lee include Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Newcastle, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Nottingham.
Lee has been embroiled in transfer rumors regarding the EPL since January. Spanish journalist Mateo Moreto noted, "Arsenal holds Lee in high regard. There has been no official contact, but the interest is definite. Manchester United and Newcastle are also closely watching his situation."
Moreto is one of the most credible journalists in Spain, especially known for covering Mallorca, where he has repeatedly shown affection for Lee. Last season, he was the first to report on transfer rumors surrounding Lee, garnering a lot of attention.
Notably, Manchester United's coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly highly evaluating Lee's capabilities. Amorim believes he can utilize Lee as a forward under the 3-4-2-1 formation or as a lateral resource.
British media outlet 'Give Me Sport' stated, "Manchester United needs creative offensive resources. Lee is a suitable target who can inject vitality into the final third," noting that "Christian Eriksen and Casemiro might leave the team, and Mason Mount is currently sidelined due to injury, increasing the likelihood of Lee receiving opportunities."
Reports from France indicate that PSG has begun preparations to sell Lee. 'Sport' mentioned that "PSG hoped Lee would grow into a key resource within the team, but the reality was different. The board is considering selling Lee to create space for new acquisitions."
Internal circumstances at PSG are also raising the likelihood of Lee's transfer. Recently, Kvartskhelia has joined the team, and Dembele has been thriving in the attacking lineup. In midfield, Vitinha and João Neves have secured starting positions. With Fabian Ruiz and Zaire-Emery also present, Lee's position has diminished further.
During the last winter transfer market, Lee remained at PSG despite the interest from several clubs. 'L'Equipe' and 'The Athletic' reported, "Coach Enrique held Lee in high regard, which is why PSG did not let him go." However, since winter, the situation has rapidly changed, and Lee's transfer rumors are igniting.
Lee's agent, Javier Garido, is currently in contact with EPL clubs. Moreto from 'Relevo' reported that "Garido has been watching matches of Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Everton in the UK and held meetings. This visit could mark the beginning of negotiations for the summer transfer market."
Interest surrounding Lee is not limited to England. 'Foot 01' hinted that "some clubs in Saudi Arabia are ready to propose a substantial amount to nurture Lee as a next-generation star." However, considering Lee's desire to continue his career in one of the top five European leagues, a move to the EPL is likely to be the most realistic choice.
Although PSG has not even completed two years since acquiring Lee, they are already expecting revenue. With several major European clubs targeting him, this summer's transfer market looks set to be a new turning point for Lee.
