Goalkeeper Andre Onana (29) is expected to be released from Manchester United (Man U).

Manchester United was optimistic about the hiring of coach Ruben Amorim after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. However, the situation is more disastrous. On the 14th, Man U lost 1-4 in the away match against Newcastle United in the 32nd round.

Ultimately, Man U is preparing a major squad overhaul to raise the overall level of the entire team. Reports have indicated that players including Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans will be cleared out at the end of this season.

Additionally, the British outlet 'CaughtOffside' reported on the 15th (Korea time), citing 'Pichajes' from Spain, that under coach Ruben Amorim, Man U is ready to let Onana go this summer.

Onana established himself as the starting goalkeeper after transferring from Inter Milan to Man U in 2023. He participated in all 38 league matches last season and also played in all 31 matches up to the game against Newcastle this season.

However, the first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarterfinal against Lyon changed everything. Onana played in the away match against Lyon on the 11th, which ended in a 2-2 draw, but he conceded the first and last equalizing goals.

Above all, trust in Onana has decreased during that process. Onana allowed the opening goal after he let a cross from Thiago Almada pass him during a free-kick situation in the 25th minute of the first half. Although the ball fell between him and the defense, he failed to respond properly.

Although Man U turned the game around with a goal from Leny Yoro in first-half stoppage time and a goal from Joshua Zirkzee in the 43rd minute, they could not maintain the lead. Even though he managed to stop a shot from Jorge Mikautadze in second-half stoppage time, the ball rebounded and led to a consolidation goal by Ryan Cherki.

Before the match, Onana drew attention for a verbal spat with former Man U player Nemanja Matic. Onana provoked the Lyon players by stating, "We are a much better team than them," to which Nemanja retorted, "One of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history."

If Man U gets eliminated by Lyon in the second leg of the quarterfinals, Onana may be identified as the culprit. Coach Amorim, unhappy with the criticism of Onana, even used Bindur instead of Onana in the league match against Newcastle.

The outlet noted, "Onana is likely to be released this summer at the discretion of coach Amorim. The Man U club is prepared to listen to offers for Onana," while highlighting, "However, it is doubtful if there are any teams that can afford his high weekly wage."

Onana is reported to earn a weekly wage of £200,000 (approximately 370 million won). The base salary is £120,000 (approximately 220 million won), but he also receives a bonus of £80,000 (approximately 150 million won).

Coach Amorim explained his decision to exclude Onana from the starting lineup against Newcastle by saying, "Honestly, there is a flow for players. Sometimes you have to keep a player on the pitch, but other times you have to break the flow," indicating that Onana was given a rest.

However, Coach Amorim stated, "Although Onana missed the Newcastle match, he will immediately prepare for the Europa League match," and added, "This match provides Onana with an opportunity for a change of atmosphere through rest. It will be different in the Europa League. He may be included in the starting lineup again."
