Director Lee Jeong-hyo's intense training methods for players are gaining attention.
Gwangju FC is currently ranked third in the Hana Bank 2025 K League 1 with a record of 3 wins, 4 draws, and 1 loss up to the eighth round. Gwangju became the only Korean club to advance to the elite quarter-finals of the Asian Champions League in late April, aiming for victory.
Gwangju is achieving good results despite a tight schedule. However, Director Lee Jeong-hyo is not satisfied. He becomes furious if the players show even a slight sign of losing focus.
Gwangju won 1-0 at home against Jeju on the 6th. Director Lee Jeong-hyo was unable to sit on the bench due to the repercussions of his ejection in the match against Daejeon. In the second half, when the two teams were tied 0-0, an interesting scene unfolded at the 25th minute. Gwangju signaled the substitution of left winger Oh Hu-seong. As Oh walked off, he shook his head, expressing some dissatisfaction with the change.
Although they won the match, Director Lee Jeong-hyo did not let it pass without comment. He pointed out that moment in the locker room after the game. Gwangju FC's official social media accounts showed the scene without alteration.
He strongly reprimanded Oh, saying, "It’s 0-0, and you should rush out quickly. Are you going to shake your head and walk off? We’re tied right now. Are you shaking your head at a tactical substitution? Do you want me to make you run more? Otherwise, score two goals!"
Director Lee emphasized the attitude and posture of the players over simple wins and losses. He reiterated, "That kind of behavior is unacceptable. If you’re a professional player, never do that! Do you want to play all by yourself?"
Although the mistake was made by Oh Hu-seong, it was a strong message directed towards the entire team. The broader implication is that I will handle the big picture, and you all must run hard.
Oh Hu-seong reflected on his actions. He stated, "I fully understand why the coach said that. I do regret my behavior. I felt great today and had the regret of not being able to show more on the field. I will reflect on my mistakes and take the positives to prepare well for the next match," showing a good attitude.
Calmed down, Director Lee Jeong-hyo explained, "Oh Hu-seong puts in tremendous effort. He has a great longing for football. He really wants to do well, but changing his style isn’t easy. I think he just needs to make a slight adjustment. It’s unfortunate because I believe he could see things differently. There are players whose potential hasn’t been realized. As a senior, I spoke from a place of concern about how to help them realize their potential."
It was not just anger at the player for not following his instructions. This was the heart of a coach who wishes for the player's further development.
A loyal follower sacrifices their life for a leader who understands their heart. This shows why Gwangju players always perform beyond their capabilities and why they are succeeding without a single national team member.
