Ving saengk Kompani (39), the head coach of Bayern Munich, expressed disappointment over the struggles of the attack.
Bayern Munich lost 1-2 to Inter Milan in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 season UEFA Champions League home match held at the Fußball Arena Munich in Munich, Germany, on the 9th (Korea time).
Although they brought the Serie A leader Inter Milan to their home ground, the loss left Bayern in a situation where they must win away to advance to the next round.
On that day, Bayern lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Harry Kane was positioned at the forefront of the attack, while Leroy Sané, Rafael Guerreiro, and Michael Olise formed the second line. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka were in midfield, and the defense consisted of Josip Stanišić, Eric Dier, Kim Min-jae, and Konrad Laimer. Jonas Urbig guarded the goal.
In the early stages of the match, Bayern took control. They unsettled Inter Milan with fast-paced attacks utilizing the flanks. In the 13th minute of the first half, Olise delivered a sharp cross from the right, and Kane seized it and shot, but his effort was blocked by goalkeeper Jan Zommer. Three minutes later, Olise's long-range shot also aimed straight at the goal but was thwarted.
In the 25th minute of the first half, a crucial chance appeared. Olise once again broke through the flank and provided Kane with a perfect opportunity, but Kane's shot hit the post and did not lead to a goal.
Inter Milan responded with a counterattack in the 33rd minute of the first half. Lautaro Martínez penetrated behind the defense to create a decisive opportunity, but Kim Min-jae swiftly chased him down and blocked the shot, averting a crisis.
Soon after, a goal was conceded. In the 38th minute of the first half, a cross sent from the left by Augusto was redirected by Turan with a one-touch pass, and Lautaro completed the play, scoring the opening goal. The first half concluded with Inter Milan leading 1-0.
In the second half, Bayern struggled to develop their offense. The absence of Musiala was keenly felt, and in the 19th minute of the second half, Guerreiro had a chance, but his shot went wide of the goal.
In the 30th minute of the second half, Coach Ving saengk Kompani pulled out the substitution card. He replaced Kim Min-jae, Sané, and Guerreiro with Sasa Boj, Serge Gnabry, and Thomas Müller. This substitution proved effective. In the 40th minute of the second half, Kimmich's cross was headed down by Laimer, and Müller calmly finished the ball in front of the goal, leveling the score.
However, in the 43rd minute of the second half, another crisis arose from the left. Davide Frattesi neatly finished off a cross from Augusto, giving Inter the lead again. In this moment, the lack of organization in the defense, due to Kim Min-jae's absence, left room for concern, and Dier's response was delayed.
The match ended in a 1-2 defeat for Bayern, and after losing at home, Bayern must secure a result in the second leg to reach the semifinals.
After the match, UEFA Champions League reported on Kompani's interview. He said in an interview with 'Amazon Prime Video', "In this match, we had the opportunity to score not just once or twice, but two or three times, if not more. We knew Inter was a team with quality players up front and always a threatening team, but today we created more chances and were more threatening," expressing disappointment in the team's scoring ability.
He continued, "Of course, it's not easy to play away against Inter Milan, but I think we shouldn't feel the need to accept defeat due to reasons such as injuries. There will surely be opportunities in Milan as well," indicating that he aims for a comeback.
Kompani pointed out again, "Since we lost this match, I can only talk about what I felt or observed. I did not feel that we were unable to score."
He added, "I don't think we failed to pose a threat either. There were opportunities until the last moment, and the results in football are not always fair. Today is just 'the first half.' No team says, 'It's over, let's go home,' just because we are down 1-2 at halftime. We believe we still have a good chance in Milan."
