It was a double celebration on the manager's birthday as the team set a new record.
The professional baseball team LG Twins achieved a franchise record with seven consecutive wins to start the season. Manager Yeom Kyung-yeop received the best birthday gift.
LG won 14-4 against the NC Dinos at Changwon NC Park on the 29th. With this victory, they accomplished seven straight wins to open the season, breaking the previous record of six straight wins set in 2017. Manager Yeom Kyung-yeop, who received a birthday cake and bouquet from the team before the game, celebrated his 57th birthday with a victory.
LG's starting pitcher Son Joo-young allowed three home runs but became the winning pitcher with six innings pitched, six hits allowed, one walk, six strikeouts, and four earned runs. Lee Woo-chan in the 7th, Woo Kang-hoon in the 8th, and Kim Young-woo in the 9th all pitched scoreless innings.
The batting lineup exploded with 12 hits, scoring double digits. Shin Min-jae had two hits in four at-bats with three RBIs and three runs, Austin had two hits in five at-bats with one home run and three RBIs, Moon Bo-kyung had one hit in three at-bats with one home run and two RBIs, and Oh Ji-hwan had three hits in four at-bats with two RBIs.
Manager Yeom Kyung-yeop praised, "In the first inning, we scored thanks to Coach Jung Soo-sung's bold under-base decision on Oh Ji-hwan's short fly to right field, which helped us gain momentum early in the game. In a situation where we needed additional runs, Shin Min-jae's two-RBI timely hit and Moon Bo-kyung's home run, along with Austin's three-run homer, allowed us to comfortably take control of the game. Austin and Shin Min-jae each led the overall lineup with three RBIs."
Manager Yeom added regarding the pitching staff, "Starter Son Joo-young had an average velocity of about 2 kilometers lower and allowed three home runs, but he fulfilled his role as a starter well. Our fielders created opportunities for scoring, which allowed our young pitchers Woo Kang-hoon and Kim Young-woo to gain successful experiences in a comfortable situation, which I believe will be a great help in future games."
Manager Yeom said, "Despite the severe and cold wind, as well as the very cold weather, many fans came and supported us, thanks to which our players could set a new franchise record for the most consecutive wins to start the season at seven. I sincerely thank the fans for their support, and I will do my best to continue to deliver good performances in return." On this day, Changwon NC Park recorded a sellout of 17,944 attendees.
