The Samsung lineup showcased its terrifying firepower by scoring 8 runs in just the 7th inning, breaking a losing streak.
The Samsung Lions of the Korea Professional Baseball League achieved a 13-2 come-from-behind victory against the Doosan Bears in the second game of the season held at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on the 29th.
Samsung recorded its 4th win against 3 losses, escaping a 3-game losing streak along with avenging the defeat from the previous day. On the other hand, Doosan, which failed to achieve its first consecutive win of the season, fell to 2 wins and 5 losses.
On the road, Samsung fielded a starting lineup against Doosan's pitcher Jack Log consisting of Kim Ji-chan (center fielder), Lee Jae-hyun (shortstop), Koo Ja-wook (designated hitter), Kang Min-ho (catcher), Park Byung-ho (first baseman), Kim Young-woong (third baseman), Kim Heon-gon (left fielder), Yang Do-geun (second baseman), and Kim Sung-yoon (right fielder).
Samsung's manager Park Jin-man explained, "I excluded Diaz for conditioning purposes. Since we were facing a left-handed starter, I made some changes to the lineup."
In response, the home team Doosan submitted the same starting lineup as the previous day against Samsung's starting pitcher Won Tae-in, including Kim Min-seok (left fielder), Kim Jae-hwan (designated hitter), Kang Seung-ho (third baseman), Jake Cave (right fielder), Yang Eui-ji (catcher), Yang Seok-hwan (first baseman), Park Jun-young (shortstop), Lee Yoo-chan (second baseman), and Jung Soo-bin (center fielder).
Before the game, Doosan's manager Lee Seung-yeop noted, "The coaches say this lineup is a winning order," revealing his hope for the first consecutive win.
As in the previous day, a tight pitching duel unfolded between the starting pitchers Won Tae-in and Jack Log. Both teams had not managed to send a single runner past second base by the 3rd inning.
Doosan scored the first run in the bottom of the 4th inning. It started with a double that went over the center fielder Kim Jae-hwan. Kang Seung-ho then drew a walk after an 8-pitch battle against Won Tae-in, and with no outs on the 1st and 2nd bases, Cave appeared and hit a one-run single to center field on Won Tae-in's first pitch. Doosan did not stop there and widened the gap with Yang Eui-ji's sacrifice fly to right field.
After being tightly held by Jack Log through the top of the 6th, Samsung's lineup exploded in the top of the 7th. Lead-off hitter Kang Min-ho got a hit, Park Byung-ho walked, and Kim Young-woong hit another single to set up a no-out bases loaded situation. Thanks to a wild pitch from Jack Log, Kang Min-ho scored the first run, followed by Kim Heon-gon at the plate hitting a one-run game-tying single, and Ryu Ji-hyuk, who came in as a pinch hitter, hitting another one-run go-ahead single in succession to turn the game around.
With a sacrifice bunt by Kim Sung-yoon, Samsung had a chance with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. Kim Ji-chan then hit a one-run single against Kim Ho-jun, and the runner from third base, Ryu Ji-hyuk, took advantage of a wild pitch by Park Sin-ji to touch home. Afterward, Lee Jae-hyun calmly drew a walk against Park Sin-ji, and Koo Ja-wook faced Kim Jung-woo and hit a routine pop-up to left field, but left fielder Kim Min-seok made a surprising error by dropping the ball. In the meantime, Kim Ji-chan also succeeded in scoring.
Samsung did not stop. After a strikeout from Kang Min-ho, pinch hitter Diaz and Kim Young-woong hit consecutive clutch singles, sealing the victory. Samsung scored a massive 8 runs in just one inning.
In the top of the 8th, Samsung completed a decisive victory with a lead-off single by Ryu Ji-hyuk followed by Kim Sung-yoon's one-run triple and Lee Jae-hyun's one-run single.
Samsung continued to capitalize, scoring 3 more runs in the top of the 9th with one out and runners on 1st and 2nd following Kim Sung-yoon's one-run single, an opponent's error, and Kim Ji-chan's one-run double.
Samsung's starting pitcher Won Tae-in exited after 5 innings with 3 hits allowed, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts, and 2 earned runs while throwing 78 pitches, followed by Bae Chan-seung (⅔ inning, no runs), Kim Tae-hoon (1⅓ inning, no runs), and Baek Jeong-hyun (2 innings, no runs) providing relief.
The lineup displayed a terrifying firepower, scoring 13 runs on 15 hits. Kim Young-woong and Ryu Ji-hyuk each recorded 3 hits, while Kim Ji-chan, Lee Jae-hyun, and Kim Sung-yoon contributed with multi-hit games, rising as the heroes of the decisive victory. Ryu Ji-hyuk, who came out as a pinch hitter against his former team and hit 3 singles including the game-winning hit, stood out the most.
In contrast, Doosan's starter Jack Log suffered his second loss of the season (without a win) after 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts, and 4 earned runs on 102 pitches. Following him, Park Jeong-soo, Kim Ho-jun, Park Sin-ji, Kim Jung-woo, Kim Myung-sin, and Park Chi-guk also struggled, giving up 9 more runs.
Samsung will aim for a winning series this weekend with Denny Reyes on the 30th. Doosan will counter with Choi Won-jun.
