Doosan's Lee Seung-yup team experienced the joy of their first win of the season after four games and three losses.
The Doosan Bears of the Korea Professional Baseball League won 3-2 against the KT Wiz in their second game of the season at Suwon KT Wiz Park on the 26th.
Doosan broke free from a three-game losing streak, marking their first victory of the season after four games. They are now 1 win and 3 losses. Meanwhile, KT suffered a setback to their three-game winning streak, bringing their record to 2 wins and 2 losses.
On the road, Doosan fielded a lineup against KT starting pitcher So Hyung-jun, consisting of Kim Min-seok (left fielder), Kim Jae-hwan (designated hitter), Kang Seung-ho (third baseman), Jake Cave (right fielder), Yang Eui-ji (catcher), Yang Seok-hwan (first baseman), Park Jun-young (shortstop), Oh Myung-jin (second baseman), and Jung Soo-bin (center fielder).
In response, the home team KT faced Doosan starting pitcher Choi Seung-yong with a lineup including Kang Baek-ho (designated hitter), Mel Rojas Jr. (right fielder), Heo Kyung-min (third baseman), Kim Min-hyuk (left fielder), Jang Seong-woo (catcher), Hwang Jae-gyun (first baseman), Oh Yoon-seok (second baseman), Bae Jeong-dae (center fielder), and Kim Sang-soo (shortstop).
From the start, Doosan took the lead. In the top of the first inning, Kim Min-seok and Kim Jae-hwan, the table setters, hit consecutive hits against the 'Bear Killer' So Hyung-jun, placing runners on first and second with no outs. The following hitter, Kang Seung-ho, assisted Kim Min-seok's advancement to third with a flyout to center field, and Cave, who caught momentum from the previous day's multi-hit game, delivered a clutch double into left field for an RBI. However, 1st base runner Kim Jae-hwan was tagged out by third baseman Heo Kyung-min after overrunning third base.
KT retaliated in the bottom of the second inning. After one out, Jang Seong-woo recorded KT's first hit of the season with a single to left field, and with two outs and a runner on first, Oh Yoon-seok succeeded in tying the game with an RBI double to the gap in right-center.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, after one out, Kim Sang-soo and Kang Baek-ho set the stage with consecutive hits on first and second base. Rojas made a flyout to right field, but Heo Kyung-min's mis-hit ball fell into a tricky spot between right field and second base for a timely hit. Second baseman Oh Myung-jin, attempting a challenging play, called for the ball and headed toward right field but ultimately failed to make the catch. KT took a 2-1 lead.
The decisive moment came in the top of the sixth inning. After one out, Kang Seung-ho hit a single to center, and Cave added an infield hit to position runners on first and second. Yang Eui-ji then hit a clutch RBI single to tie the game, followed by Yang Seok-hwan with another RBI infield hit that turned the game around. Yang Seok-hwan hit a slow grounder toward third base and dashed to first, recording an RBI single after a video review.
KT had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out when pinch hitter Moon Sang-cheol and Oh Yoon-seok both drew consecutive walks to place runners on first and second, but Bae Jeong-dae popped out to center field and Kim Sang-soo flied out to right field. In the bottom of the seventh, Rojas' double set up a one-out, two-on opportunity, but Heo Kyung-min's well-hit ball went straight to the shortstop, resulting in an unfortunate double play.
Doosan's starting pitcher Choi Seung-yong threw 5⅓ innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 walks, striking out 3 batters and giving up 2 runs on 97 pitches to secure the win in his first start of the season. He was followed by Park Jeong-soo (⅔ inning, no runs), Kim Ho-jun (⅓ inning, no runs), Lee Young-ha (1⅔ innings, no runs), and Kim Taek-yeon (1 inning, no runs), with Kim Taek-yeon earning his first save of the season.
In the batting lineup, Cave and Yang Eui-ji recorded multi-hit games, effectively fulfilling their roles as key hitters.
On the other hand, KT starting pitcher So Hyung-jun, making his first start in two years, completed 6 innings, giving up 9 hits, with no walks, striking out 4 batters, and allowing 3 runs on 79 pitches, marking a quality start but also experiencing his first loss. Kim Min-hyuk and Kim Sang-soo's two hits were overshadowed by the defeat.
The two teams will face off again on the 27th at the same venue for the final game of their midweek three-game series.
