South Korea could not defeat Jordan at home.
The national football team, led by head coach Hong Myung-bo, tied with Jordan 1-1 in the 8th match of Group B in the third round of qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held on the evening of the 25th at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.
Ranked first, South Korea (4 wins, 4 draws, 16 points) is being chased by second-placed Jordan (3 wins, 4 draws, 1 loss, 13 points) by 3 points after drawing both of its home matches. South Korea’s early assurance of qualification for the World Cup has also evaporated.
South Korea gained the upper hand with a header goal by Lee Jae-sung from a corner kick taken by Son Heung-min just five minutes into the first half. It seemed like South Korea was going to control the game easily.
However, in the 30th minute of the first half, a mistake by Park Yong-woo resulted in a possession loss, which led to a tying goal by Al-Mardi. South Korea could no longer maintain control. After finishing the first half 1-1, South Korea made a total offensive effort by bringing in Yang Min-hyeok, Yang Hyun-jun, and Oh Se-hun in the second half but could not secure a win.
Jamal Salami, the Jordanian coach, had a very bright expression after tying against the strong South Korean team on enemy territory. Even though they did not win, he had a smile indicating that the objective was achieved.
Coach Salami noted, "I would like to thank the players who showed high levels of skill. It was not an easy game, as we allowed an early first goal. South Korea is a very respectable team. Thanks to the Korea Football Association as well. South Korea has many superstar players but is humble and is a team at a high level. Although head coach Hong Myung-bo made several substitutions with Son Heung-min and others, our defense held up very solidly. All players, including Moussa and Yazan, did well. I would like to congratulate the Jordanian fans. It would be great to go to the World Cup with South Korea."
Despite conceding an early goal and tying on the road, Jordan showed resilience. Salami said, "We prepared well for the match against South Korea. There were variables like the weather, but we were physically and mentally well-prepared. The players were also motivated. Although South Korea made many changes, we were able to score an equalizer. The defense was solid. We played good football with patience. I am satisfied with today's match result. Our next match is in June. We are very close to our goal of the World Cup."
