"Happiness is in Seoul."
Former England national team player and current captain of FC Seoul, Jesse Lingard (33, Seoul), candidly shared his thoughts on life in Korea in an interview with British media.
The British 'Daily Mail' reported on the 22nd (Korean time) that Lingard spoke broadly about his life in Seoul, memories from his time at Manchester United, and his dreams for the future.
Lingard currently resides in Seoul and is active in the K League. He expressed his satisfaction, saying, "Seoul is really nice. There are many places to go, and the food is delicious." He particularly showed great affection for his life in Korea, stating, "Life has become wonderful again." He enjoys the fact that many fans recognize him and ask for photos even when he wears a mask while out.
"I usually try to take pictures with regular people and sign autographs for everyone. Someday when I retire, no one will make such requests of me. It's surprising and I am grateful that fans like me as a person and as a football player," Lingard explained, noting that he is truly enjoying life in Seoul and the fans' reactions.
He did not hold back on praising the K League. Lingard said, "The level of football here is very high and technical. I genuinely enjoy playing football here. When I watch highlights from England, there is a lot of space, but not in Korea. The spaces are tight, and opponents constantly charge at you."
Lingard, who currently wears the number 10 jersey for FC Seoul, said, "I try to position myself near the referee. Someone once said that the referee finds the best position, and that's actually how it plays out in matches."
Before coming to Korea, he had offers from various places in Europe, South America, and the United States, but most were short-term contracts, and he ultimately chose Seoul. Lingard emphatically stated, "I am not simply a 'flashy player', but I take my career seriously. People misunderstood, but I have achieved many things like winning the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Europa League, and reaching the semifinals of the World Cup. It has been a life of success, not failure."
He also recalled, "I started playing football at the age of 7, and Alex Ferguson said I would be part of the Manchester United first team by age 22, and it actually happened. I had injuries and spent a lot of time on loan. I considered a transfer to Newcastle United but ultimately created my place at Manchester United."
The friendship with Paul Pogba during his time at Manchester United was also mentioned. Lingard emphasized, "Pogba is my best friend. We talk every day. Did we ruin Manchester United's culture? Rather, we tried to create a better atmosphere. Winning matches while laughing and enjoying—that's a real good culture."
He did not hide his longing for family. He mentioned about sometimes shedding tears at the airport because his daughter and family are in the UK. However, he said, "Right now, I am mentally and physically healthy. I have regained my passion for football, and I am really happy to be playing here again."
Regarding his future plans, he stated, "I would like to play football for about four more years. After that, I am considering transitioning to acting. I plan to try appearing on broadcasts or doing cameos in Korea as well. I have a lot of interest in acting."
At the end of the interview, Lingard said this.
"Happiness is the most important thing. And my happiness now is here in Seoul. I genuinely love the culture and the people of Korea. I am just grateful to be such a lucky person."
Having shone on the biggest stages in Europe, Lingard is now writing a new chapter in the K League. As he dons the FC Seoul uniform, his warm connection with Korean fans is expected to continue.
