Luka Modric (39, Real Madrid) has taken another step closer to his dream of retiring at 'Real Madrid.' With his contract set to expire at the end of the 2024-2025 season, Modric is reportedly in discussions to renew with the club.
The British outlet 'Tribuna' reported on the 22nd (Korean time), "Modric is still maintaining a stable performance, and as long as his physical condition allows, there is a high possibility he will remain at Real."
The Spanish media 'Football España' also noted, "Carlo Ancelotti is satisfied with Modric's positive impact on the team both on and off the field," adding, "The club is considering a one-year extension."
That’s not all. Nicolo Schira, a journalist well-versed in the European soccer transfer market, reported, "Real Madrid is preparing to extend Modric's contract until 2026," further clarifying the atmosphere. Local outlet 'Mundo Deportivo' also forecasted, "Modric is a player who can choose when to step down. The likelihood of Real renewing his contract is very high."
Modric joined Santiago Bernabéu from Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the 2012-2013 season. Over the next 13 seasons, he led the midfield and played a pivotal role in the team. He has appeared in a total of 579 matches, scoring 43 goals and providing 93 assists, and has lifted numerous significant trophies, including four La Liga titles and six Champions League titles. Notably, he is also remembered for breaking the 'Messi-Ronaldo era' by winning the Ballon d'Or in 2018.
Despite his advanced age, he continues to perform at a level comparable to his peak. This season, he has appeared in 27 out of 28 La Liga matches, starting in 11 of them, demonstrating his continued competitiveness within the team. Therefore, there is no reason for the club to hesitate in offering a renewal to such a seasoned player.
In an interview with French outlet 'Telefoot,' Modric stated, "I am not rushing to renew my contract, but finishing my career at Real has been a long-time dream." It is evident that he is not at a point to discuss retirement just yet.
Real Madrid has continued to renew Modric’s contract on a yearly basis since the 2022-2023 season. If they agree to a short-term renewal in a similar manner this time, Modric is expected to remain a legendary player at Madrid even in his 40s.
Modric is writing the final chapter at Real. Until the day he takes off his jersey at the Bernabéu, his football career is still ongoing.
