SSG Landers completed a thrilling comeback.
SSG won 6-5 against the Doosan Bears in the opening game of the '2025 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League' regular season at Incheon SSG Landers Field on the 22nd. There was no victory more exhilarating than this in front of 23,000 sold-out fans.
Doosan started with ace Colovin, who has 28 major league wins. The starting lineup consisted of Kim Min-seok (left fielder), Kim Jae-hwan (designated hitter), Yang Eui-ji (catcher), Cave (right fielder), Kang Seung-ho (third baseman), Yang Seok-hwan (first baseman), Oh Myung-jin (second baseman), Park Jun-young (shortstop), and Jeong Soo-bin (center fielder).
SSG had Drew Anderson, known for his fastball last year, on the mound. The starting lineup included Choi Ji-hoon (center fielder), Jeong Jun-jae (second baseman), Eredia (left fielder), Han Yu-seom (designated hitter), Lee Ji-young (catcher), Park Seong-han (shortstop), Ha Jae-hoon (right fielder), Ko Myung-jun (first baseman), Park Ji-hwan (third baseman), with Ha Jae-hoon and Ko Myung-jun both starting in right field.
SSG seized the momentum. In the bottom of the second, lead-off hitter Lee Ji-young and Park Seong-han reached base on consecutive hit-by-pitches, creating a chance on first and second with no outs. Ha Jae-hoon then took the lead with a timely hit to left-center. With no outs and runners on first and third, Ko Myung-jun extended the lead with a timely hit to center. After Park Ji-hwan struck out with one out, Choi Ji-hoon’s sacrifice fly to center field gave SSG a 3-0 lead.
However, Doosan quickly succeeded in turning the game around. In the top of the third, with one out, Jeong Soo-bin reached base after an eight-pitch battle that ended in a walk, creating an opportunity. Kim Min-seok struck out, but with two outs and a runner on first, Kim Jae-hwan hit a timely double down the right field line to score one run. Then, in the top of the fourth, lead-off hitter Kang Seung-ho walked. Yang Seok-hwan hit a ground ball to third, but a mishap during the double play attempt resulted in a runner on second with one out. Oh Myung-jin flew out to left field, but Park Jun-young's timely hit to right brought in another run. After Jeong Soo-bin walked, there were runners on first and second with two outs, and Kim Min-seok hit a two-RBI triple to right field to make it 4-3.
SSG advanced the inning when lead-off hitter Eredia and Han Yu-seom both hit consecutive singles in the bottom of the fifth, creating a no-out situation on first and second. Lee Ji-young's sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third with one out. Park Seong-han's grounder to short allowed them to tie the game at 4-4.
But Doosan quickly flipped the game in the top of the sixth. After two outs, Jeong Soo-bin and Kim Min-seok reached base with back-to-back walks, creating a two-out, first and second opportunity. Kim Jae-hwan hit a timely single to right field, regaining the lead at 5-4.
Doosan's starting pitcher Colovin finished with 5 innings pitched, 7 hits allowed, 1 walk, 2 hit-by-pitches, 6 strikeouts, and 4 earned runs. SSG starter Anderson also posted 3⅔ innings pitched, 4 hits allowed, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts, and 4 earned runs before being pulled early.
The game continued into a bullpen battle. Each team exchanged opportunities, with Doosan first seizing a chance. In the top of the eighth, Park Jun-young's single to right created an opportunity. Jeong Soo-bin flied out to right, but a single by Kim Min-seok set up a one-out, first and second situation. Kim Jae-hwan struck out on three pitches, and Yang Eui-ji walked, loading the bases for Doosan. However, Cave flew out to left, ending the threat.
However, SSG did not miss the opportunity. In the bottom of the eighth, with one out, Park Seong-han walked. At bat was Ha Jae-hoon, and Oh Tae-gon entered as a pinch hitter. Oh Tae-gon turned the game around with one swing. In a matchup against Doosan's closer Lee Yong-ha, he launched a two-run homer that sailed over the left field wall on the third pitch, which came in at 150 km/h, giving SSG a 6-5 lead.
SSG's Jo Byeong-hyeon, who came in during the eighth with the bases loaded, held off Doosan until the ninth, delivering a thrilling opening game comeback victory in front of 23,000 home fans.
