The 'French legend' Thierry Henry (48) was caught on camera looking surprised during the match, drawing attention.
Henry was in the CBS Sports booth in the United States to broadcast the 2024-2025 North American Football Confederation (CONCACAF) Nations League A semifinal between the United States and Panama on the 21st (Korean time) at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
The match was decided by a final goal that emerged in the 4th minute of stoppage time, leading to a 1-0 victory for Panama. Cecilio Waterman (34, Coquimbo) scored with a right-footed shot from inside the right box, hitting the left corner of the United States goal.
With this victory, Panama reached the final stage. This marks the first time Panama has advanced to the finals of this competition since its inception in the 2019-2020 season. Panama will clash with Mexico, who defeated Canada 1-0, on the 24th, aiming for their first title.
Henry was surprised immediately after Waterman scored the goal. Waterman, who scored the final goal, threw off his shirt and ran towards him over the advertisement boards. Clint Dempsey, a former U.S. national team player and Tottenham forward, who was sitting next to him in the broadcast booth, also appeared to be amazed.
Waterman shouted something loudly in front of Henry, and although Henry looked slightly startled, he burst into laughter. Henry seemed to enjoy the moment, mingling with Waterman and the other Panama players.
According to CBS Sports, Waterman repeatedly shouted to Henry in Spanish, "You were my idol." He then showered him with kisses on the face.
After the match, Waterman met Henry again in the CBS Sports booth and explained, "Last night, people asked me who my childhood idol was, and I answered Henry. After scoring, I thought I should come over to say hello to you."
In an interview with ESPN, Waterman said, "I have had many wonderful moments in my career, but this one is different. It was truly an unbelievable moment."
Meanwhile, the United States, who had won all three previous tournaments, was relegated to the 3rd and 4th place playoff for the first time. This was disappointing for the United States, which is one of the host countries for the 2026 FIFA North American World Cup.
Mauricio Pochettino, who is leading the U.S. national team, bowed his head. Pochettino recently noted through British Sky Sports that he still maintains a good relationship with Daniel Levy, the chairman of Tottenham, and stated, "I want to return to Tottenham one day," drawing attention.
