A shocking claim has emerged that Tottenham captain Son Heung-min (33) could transfer to a second division team.
Former Brentford manager Martin Allen noted in an interview with Tottenham Hotspur News on the 20th (Korea time) that "Son Heung-min is a fantastic player. But to be honest, he is losing his former speed. Compared to his prime, his performance has dropped significantly. It's not surprising that Tottenham is considering how to transfer him, and asking himself, 'Where will he go? If it’s a team promoted from the Championship, they would be willing to acquire Son Heung-min, as he still has a lot to offer.'"
Tottenham Hotspur News added, "In the past, Son Heung-min had performed excellently alongside Harry Kane at Tottenham. However, after Kane left for Bayern Munich, he has failed to become a reliable solution. This season, he has only scored 7 goals in the Premier League," stating that "sending Son Heung-min away might benefit both sides."
They added, "Looking at the current situation, it seems Son Heung-min's time at Tottenham is coming to an end. Young players like Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert are emerging as important options for the future."
Currently, Son Heung-min is under contract with Tottenham until the summer of 2026. Even after this season ends, there is still a year left. He could have been eligible for free agency (FA) this coming summer, but last month, Tottenham activated a one-year extension option.
Naturally, the possibility of Son Heung-min's FA transfer this summer has been blocked. In fact, Barcelona considered acquiring Son Heung-min, but this was effectively unsuccessful. Several other teams, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Galatasaray, have been linked with him, but all have quieted down.
However, the rumors surrounding Son Heung-min's sale continue. Especially as Tottenham is experiencing severe struggles, the pressure seems to be shifting onto captain Son Heung-min. Criticism is growing that he lacks leadership and there are questions about whether he deserves to be a starter.
If Tottenham wants to part ways with Son Heung-min, this summer is the ideal time. With the situation blocking FA transfers, it is practically the last chance to sell him at the desired transfer fee.
Tottenham also appears to be considering separating from Son Heung-min. TBR Football reported last month that "Son’s camp believes that Tottenham searching for various attacking options, including a left winger, is a clear signal that he is not included in the club’s plans."
Cut Offside also expressed concern, stating, "Son Heung-min is a Tottenham legend who has built an excellent career in North London over the past decade. However, it might become difficult to cheer for him for much longer. Even if Tottenham is still satisfied with Son Heung-min, like most players, he is at an age where the aging curve is inevitable."
The thoughts of Tottenham’s board are said to be similar. TBR Football revealed that "Tottenham withdrew from contract negotiations with Son Heung-min last summer," and added that "top officials intervened to cancel talks due to concerns about Son Heung-min's long-term future. They believe they have been proven correct in their decision."
