Professional baseball player Oh Seung-hwan, the 'living legend' of the Samsung Lions, has lost his mother.

According to the Samsung club, Oh Seung-hwan has been deeply saddened since his mother passed away on the 18th. The funeral is set up at Room 103 of the Korea University Ansan Hospital funeral home. The burial will take place at 7 a.m. on the 21st. The resting place is Seoul City Crematorium.

Oh Seung-hwan, who graduated from Gyeonggi High School and Dankook University, joined Samsung in 2005 and started achieving the least games and shortest season 100 saves in his third season in 2007, setting records of 150 saves and 200 saves in 2009 and 2011 respectively while breaking both the least games and youngest records simultaneously. Notably, the 200 saves achieved in just 334 games was a world record for the least games.

Furthermore, Oh Seung-hwan achieved 250, 300, 350, and 400 saves, all as the first in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) league, creating an unparalleled record in the saves institutional sector. Despite being abroad for an incredible six years from 2014 to 2019, he continued to accumulate saves at a remarkable pace.

On June 6, 2023, he made history with his 500th combined saves in the Korea, Japan, and United States leagues during a game against NC in Daegu, followed by achieving his 400th career save in KBO, without giving up a run in 1⅓ innings during the final home game against SSG on October 14.

Until last year, Oh Seung-hwan had appeared in 726 KBO games, recording 44 wins, 33 losses, 427 saves, and a 2.25 earned run average, making it likely that he will be the first Samsung pitcher to have his number retired.
