Cristian Romero (26, Tottenham) is expected to be a hot potato in this summer's transfer market. Tottenham has set a deadline for contract negotiations, while Real Madrid is keeping an eye on him.
The British outlet 'TeamTalk' reported on the 18th (Korean time) that "Tottenham has given Romero time to decide on the contract extension before the end of the season. If no agreement is reached, they plan to push for a transfer."
It is predicted that the transfer fee will be set at £60 million (approximately 1.13 billion won), and Real Madrid is contemplating whether it can afford this price.
The reason Real Madrid is targeting Romero is clear. He led Argentina to victory in the 2022 Qatar World Cup and has strong man-to-man defending ability along with stable buildup, which are parts that Real Madrid needs. Given the frequent injuries of Éder Militão and David Alaba, he is a suitable card for Real Madrid, which requires defensive reinforcements.
After joining Tottenham in the 2021-2022 season, Romero quickly established himself as a central figure in the defense. As the vice-captain, he has demonstrated more mature game management than before. His previously noted impulsive tendency and aggressive play have also decreased.
While Tottenham is trying to retain Romero, 'TeamTalk' predicts that the gloomy future of Tottenham may lead him to consider a transfer. Tottenham is currently sitting at 14th in the Premier League this season. They have also been eliminated from the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. The only remaining possibility for a trophy is the UEFA Europa League (UEL), but the competition is fierce.
Having never lifted a trophy since donning the Tottenham jersey in 2021, Romero may find the sweet call of Real Madrid, which consistently challenges for the top.
