Bayern Munich is considering re-signing Eric Dier (31).
German 'Sky Sports' reported on the 15th (Korean time) that 'Dier wants to continue his career in Munich. The club values his performance and influence within the team highly and is considering an extension.'
Dier joined Munich on loan from Tottenham in January 2024. He was evaluated as the fourth option after Kim Min-jae, Upamecano, and De Ligt, but he has performed beyond expectations. He stepped up as a starter while Kim Min-jae was away competing in the Asian Cup and continued to receive regular opportunities. He has contributed to the team's game management, showcasing strengths in both defense and buildup.
As the new season began, Dier's position became precarious. Before this season, Bayern appointed Vincent Kompany as the new coach. Unlike former coach Thomas Tuchel, Kompany prefers a high defensive line. Dier, who is not particularly fast, found himself at a disadvantage in this tactic and fell behind in the competition for a starting spot. Kim Min-jae and Upamecano have established themselves as starters.
Despite limited appearances, Dier maintained a stable performance. He earned trust by playing backup roles to Kim Min-jae and Upamecano. During the match against Union Berlin on the 15th, amid Kim Min-jae's injury absences, Dier started alongside Upamecano.
'Sky Sports' noted that 'Dier does not express dissatisfaction even when used as a substitute. The club recognizes his dedication,' which explains the high possibility of a contract re-signing.
Initially, Bayern did not seem to consider an extension with Dier. There were rumors of signing Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen, and Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic were available as center-back options. However, with the injuries to Kim Min-jae and Ito, Dier's role became important. As a result, the club is re-evaluating the possibility of extending his contract.
Director General Eberl expressed a positive stance during a press conference on the 14th, stating, 'His future will be determined by his performance.'
