After an unclear ruling, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Luis Enrique issued a warning to Liverpool.
The PSG team, led by Enrique, lost 0-1 to Liverpool in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League (UCL) held at Parc des Princes in Paris, France, on the 6th.
As the figures '27 shots to 2' and '10 on target to 1' indicate, PSG dominated Liverpool. However, they lacked finishing. Opposing goalkeeper Alisson made an impressive nine saves, neutralizing PSG's attacking strength.
Ultimately, while PSG, which should have scored 3 to 4 goals, remained silent with no goals, Liverpool did not miss a single clear opportunity. In the 42nd minute of the second half, Harvey Elliott's shot allowed Liverpool to smile broadly.
PSG, having lost one point, must face Liverpool in the second leg at Anfield in England on the 12th. If they draw or lose that match, they will be eliminated from the Champions League. This means they must go all out.
PSG is on an undefeated streak in Ligue 1. In their last 10 matches, PSG demonstrated overwhelming offensive power by scoring 40 goals. This was the first loss without scoring since November 27 of last year against Bayern Munich in the league phase.
According to the UK 'Mirror', Enrique noted after the match, "We have nothing to lose," adding, "That makes us dangerous" regarding the second leg.
He continued, "It's hard to think positively about the match. We deserved to win," while expressing regret by saying, "Liverpool's best player was their goalkeeper. Football can be unfair at times," but he avoided mentioning the referee's decision.
Enrique also expressed his dissatisfaction with an unclear ruling in the 25th minute of the first half. Bradley Barcola fell in the box after being pushed from behind by Ibrahima Konate of the opposing team. A penalty kick seemed likely, but after a video review (VAR), it was determined there was no foul.
Instead, Enrique emphasized, "We have nothing to lose and are ready to face Liverpool. Of course, we will succeed," showing his determination for the next match.
On the other hand, Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who struggled to secure the win, reflected on the incident between Barcola and Konate, saying, "He was the best referee suited for this match. If the referee had blown the whistle, I don't think VAR would have overturned that decision."
He added, "And it’s clear to me that it was right for the referee not to overturn the decision," explaining, "Because it clearly wasn't a wrong decision. It was indeed a significant one."
Meanwhile, Lee Kang-in started the match on the bench. However, he had to remain seated and watch the game without being called upon by Enrique.
