Perhaps Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham Hotspur) would be a perfect fit. Bayern Munich is looking for a forward who can play multiple positions.
Christian Falk of Germany's Bild reported on the 5th (Korea time) that Bayern is having difficulty finding a backup striker for Harry Kane while interviewing Max Eberl, Bayern's director.
Currently, Bayern is aiming to strengthen its attacking line. There is no reliable striker to take over from Kane, and the wings also need refreshing. It is known that high-wage players Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman are all likely to leave the team.
However, having a solid world-class striker like Kane makes it difficult to bring in a preferred forward. Eberl noted, "We are looking for another striker. But it's not easy. Just look at Manchester City. The outstanding striker Julián Álvarez had to leave the team due to a lack of playing time while acting as a backup for Erling Haaland."
He continued, "So it's challenging to find a player who can solely replace Kane. However, it may be better to look for a player who can be utilized in various ways," adding that they are considering the acquisition of a multi-player who can take on multiple roles in the attack. They have someone in mind who could potentially lead the front line in Kane's absence but could also play as a winger or an attacking midfielder, depending on the situation.
Of course, Bayern already has a promising forward in Mathys Tel, born in 2005. Like Son Heung-min, his primary position is the left side, but he can also take on the role of a central striker based on his speed. He also shares the remarkable shooting ability using both feet.
However, insufficient playing time became an issue. Tel was unable to gain sufficient trust from manager Vincent Kompany and struggled to seize opportunities this season. Ultimately, he chose to be loaned to Tottenham to grow.
As seen in Tel's case, it is not enough to simply be able to play various positions. There must be enough skill to threaten the positions of existing starters for it to be meaningful.
Especially young players are unlikely to be satisfied with backup roles. They need to accumulate practical experience to develop their skills. This context explains why Tel ultimately accepted Tottenham's offer after much contemplation.
Therefore, versatile veteran striker Son Heung-min could be a good choice. He primarily plays on the left wing but can also operate on the right side. Moreover, after Kane left for Bayern in the summer of 2023, he even transformed into a central striker.
Son Heung-min played more centrally than on the left side last season. Although it was somewhat unfamiliar, he showcased sharp finishing ability by netting 17 goals and providing 10 assists in the Premier League. Additionally, he demonstrated significant improvement in his passing skills to set up teammates.
Coincidentally, discussions about Bayern targeting Son Heung-min have been reignited. Recently, Spain's Fichajes stated, "Son Heung-min is seriously considering a transfer to Bayern, and Bayern also plans to strengthen their attack by acquiring him," asserting that Bayern views Son Heung-min as a player who "perfectly aligns with the team's tactical philosophy."
In fact, Bayern expressed interest in Son Heung-min four years ago. Germany's TZ reported, "It is not the first time Bayern has shown interest in Son Heung-min. Bayern's directors have paid attention to him since spring 2021 as an all-round attacker. However, at that time, it ended in failure due to re-signing with Tottenham and high transfer fees. Bayern would have needed to present €85 million (about 131.5 billion won) to sign Son Heung-min then."
Moreover, news about Son Heung-min's re-signing with Tottenham has also quieted down. Contrary to speculation, it is reported that Son Heung-min's side is hesitant about re-signing. The Times of London stated, "Tottenham wants Son Heung-min to retire at the club. However, they have not been able to persuade him to extend his contract, which has only a year left as of July," explaining that there has been no progress in negotiations between both parties.
'ESPN' also reported, "One source said, 'Perhaps the biggest concern is not that Son Heung-min is not scoring but that he is not smiling.'" It stated, "Son Heung-min is a highly dedicated professional, and he is struggling with the team's collective issues. He is not a player who causes a ruckus. However, his side has expressed disappointment over the lack of discussions regarding a new contract."
As Son Heung-min faces challenges at Tottenham, an offer from Bayern would be hard to resist. Unlike Tottenham, Bayern is always a team close to trophies, and the presence of 'dear friend' Kane adds to the allure. Son Heung-min and Kane formed an impressive duo at Tottenham, combining for an astonishing 47 goals in the league alone, setting the record for the most combined goals in Premier League history.
In Germany, there is also hope for a reunion between the two. In December of last year, Kane named Son Heung-min as a player he would like to bring to Tottenham. He also added, "My relationship with Son Heung-min is really good. We formed an excellent partnership at Tottenham and became good friends off the field. I think we could do quite well together in the Bundesliga."
In response, TZ commented, "Kane and Son Heung-min played nearly 300 matches together over eight years and scored countless goals. They have formed a perfect harmony both on and off the pitch," and continued, "Kane's thoughts are not so far-fetched. Son Heung-min was also linked with Bayern several years ago. He speaks fluent German and possesses two-footed ability, allowing him to play in almost every position in Bayern's attack."
