'Soul partner' Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) sings. The transfer rumors surrounding Son Heung-min continue. However, local media have projected that he will remain with the team.
TZ noted on the 4th (Korean time) that "Bayern Munich has added a new top star to their transfer list. Harry Kane will likely be pleased," while raising the prospect of Son Heung-min's acquisition.
Son Heung-min's contract with Tottenham will expire in June 2026.
Originally set to expire on June 30, Son Heung-min's contract was extended until 2026 after Tottenham triggered a one-year extension option that was in Son's contract last January.
However, claims have emerged that the partnership between Tottenham and Son Heung-min may end this upcoming summer. Yet, forecasts have arisen locally in England indicating he will remain with the team.
Football London’s Alasdair Gold listed seven players expected to leave Tottenham this summer, excluding Son Heung-min.
The seven players mentioned for potential release by Gold include Richarlison, Timo Werner, Bryan Gil, Yves Bissouma, Sergio Reguilón, Fraser Forster, and Alfie Whiteman. Among them, Forster and Whiteman are goalkeepers. Gil is currently on loan at Girona in Spain's La Liga. Richarlison, Werner, Bissouma, and Reguilón are currently in the first-team squad.
While there are players who could be released, some names are somewhat surprising. Players like Richarlison, a former national team player from Brazil who was brought in at a high cost, and Bissouma, who had been a regular in the first half of this season, stand out.
In contrast, Son Heung-min was excluded. Two defenders, Cristian Romero and Mickey van de Ven, who have been reported to be targets for bigger clubs, were also not included in the list.
The Times reported that "Tottenham wants to keep Son Heung-min through a contract extension, as he is one of the best players in the club's history, but negotiations are struggling as Son has shown skepticism about extending his contract."
ESPN reported, "Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah were born just three weeks apart in the summer of 1992. Both are legendary figures at their respective clubs. However, while one is having the best season of his life and leading Liverpool as a strong contender for the Premier League title, the other is questioning his 'untouchable' status at Tottenham for the first time in his career."
It continued, "Some Tottenham fans have started to wonder if Son Heung-min can still be their driving force, even with 10 years behind him in North London. His professional and personal responsibilities appear to be affected by the issues at Tottenham this season. One source noted, 'Perhaps the biggest concern is not that Son isn't scoring, but that he isn't smiling.'"
Tottenham Hotspur News exclusively reported on the 3rd that "the timetable for Son Heung-min's contract renewal has emerged. Tottenham wants to keep him, but negotiations have not yet started." It further stated, "Son Heung-min caused significant confusion after the 0-1 defeat to Manchester City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday. He is not having the best season." It noted that "while his contract was recently extended to June 2026, Son Heung-min could still leave Tottenham this summer, potentially reuniting with Harry Kane."
Tottenham Hotspur News also quoted, "Tottenham appears to think otherwise. They will start contract negotiations with Son Heung-min in December 2025. According to The Times, Tottenham wants Son to retire in North London."
Recently, there have been voices suggesting that with Son Heung-min's aging curve, his position as a leader has diminished.
Tottenham Hotspur News projected, "If performance does not improve, Son Heung-min could consider a transfer this upcoming summer."
It added, "Son Heung-min is a legendary player for Tottenham. Emotionally, he is likely to stay and extend his contract. However, since he has yet to lift a trophy at the club, he may consider new challenges. If big clubs try to sign him this summer, Son Heung-min may choose a new environment with the goal of winning at the end of his career. If Tottenham wants to keep Son Heung-min, performance needs to improve. Additionally, an environment that can compete for championships in the coming years needs to be created."
Caught Offside reported on the 3rd that "Tottenham could lose another star player (Son Heung-min) to Munich."
It continued, "In recent years, Tottenham has sent two key players to Bayern Munich. Harry Kane and Eric Dier have headed to Bayern Munich. They are now challenging for the Bundesliga title under manager Vincent Kompany. Both players have not experienced league championships at Tottenham. However, they have a significant chance of earning their first league championship medal at Bayern," and noted that "Bayern Munich has been proactive in signing Premier League players. In the past, Leroy Sané was acquired from Manchester City, and Sadio Mané (Al Nassr) was taken from Liverpool. Last summer, they signed Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. Now, they are targeting another attacker who has been active in the Premier League for a long time. Bayern Munich is ready to offer Son Heung-min an opportunity to open a new chapter in his career."
TZ noted, "Bayern Munich is currently looking for high-quality players to strengthen their attacking line," and explained that "one potential new signing will know firsthand what it means to play alongside a star player like Harry Kane." It added, "Bayern Munich is looking to bring in an experienced striker to further enhance their attacking power, and Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur is on the list of transfer targets," and mentioned that "Son Heung-min initially threatened to leave Tottenham as a free agent this summer, but recently extended his contract by another year until 2026."
Of course, Bayern Munich had shown interest in Son Heung-min back in 2021. At that time, Bayern Munich proposed a five-year deal worth £200,000 per week (368 million won), but the transfer did not materialize. The total amount was an enormous deal reaching 96.9 billion won.
If Son Heung-min transfers to Bayern Munich this time, it is likely he will sign a multi-year contract for up to three years.
German outlet Abendzeitung noted at the end of last year that "If Son Heung-min joins Bayern Munich, it’s likely he will receive a two-plus-one-year contract, similar to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting." However, due to the recent publication of Tottenham's release list, substantial negotiations and mental maneuvering will be necessary for Son Heung-min to head to Bayern Munich.
