Reports have emerged that Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham) may reunite with Harry Kane (32, Bayern Munich).
'Sports Mall' quoted Spanish media 'Pichajes' on the 27th (Korea time), stating, "Bayern is looking to acquire Son Heung-min. Son Heung-min also wants to transfer to a team with greater ambitions."
Tottenham, which lost to Manchester City 0-1 that day, is currently 13th in the Premier League. The point gap with 4th place Manchester City is 14 points, making the chance of qualifying for the Champions League virtually slim. Winning the Europa League is a realistic way to engage in European competitions, but amid the league's poor atmosphere, expectations for Tottenham to win are low.
In this context, reports have emerged that Son Heung-min wants to transfer to a team where he can set bigger goals and work towards them. Bayern, referred to as a 'prestigious Bundesliga club,' is being mentioned as a destination.
'Sports Mall' asked, "Should Tottenham let Son Heung-min go?" stating that "Son Heung-min contributed two assists in a 4-1 victory against Ipswich Town on Feb. 22. He was one of the standout players in the match. However, there are criticisms of his performance this season. Son Heung-min will turn 33 in July. Some fans are concerned that his prime may be over. In the 2024-2025 Premier League season, Son Heung-min has recorded 6 goals and 9 assists so far, which is the second-lowest tally in his Tottenham career. However, if he adds 6 more attacking points, he will match his record from the 2019-2020 season, during which he achieved the fourth-most attacking points at Tottenham. Son Heung-min has only one year left until the contract expires this summer. Tottenham must decide whether to extend the contract or allow the player to transfer before his performance declines," providing detailed insights into Son Heung-min's current situation.
If Son Heung-min transfers to Bayern, he will reunite with close friend Harry Kane, who moved from Tottenham to Bayern last season.
Former Tottenham forward Harry Kane transferred to Bayern before the 2023-2024 season. He scored 213 goals in the Premier League while playing for Tottenham over 11 seasons.
Despite ranking second in all-time Premier League scoring, Kane did not lift a single trophy during his time at Tottenham. Ultimately, he moved to Bayern in search of 'titles.'
Son Heung-min has scored 126 goals in the Premier League, placing him 17th in league history for all-time scoring. However, he has yet to win any titles.
'Sports Mall' noted, "If he transfers to Bayern in the upcoming summer transfer market, he has a great chance to finally lift his first trophy. Bayern has won the Bundesliga championship 11 times in the last 12 seasons."
Kane and Son Heung-min earned the nickname 'the soul duo' for their excellent chemistry during their time at Tottenham. The two players scored a total of 47 goals in the Premier League, surpassing the duo of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba (36 goals), making them the top-scoring combination in Premier League history. Son Heung-min recorded 24 goals and 23 assists, while Kane had 23 goals and 24 assists.
The two players also played significant roles in each other's title achievements. Kane has won the Premier League Golden Boot three times alongside Son Heung-min, while Son Heung-min became the first Asian player to win the Golden Boot in the 2021-2022 season.
The bond between Kane and Son Heung-min, who had played together for eight years at Tottenham, ended last year when Kane transferred to Bayern.
Son Heung-min remains at Tottenham, leading the team. He is working with various forwards, including Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison, and Timo Werner, but has yet to find a partner who can fill Kane's void.
Meanwhile, Kane has reportedly hinted at missing Son Heung-min at Bayern.
According to a German media report on the 16th of last year, Kane responded with "Son Heung-min" when asked at a fan meeting which 'Tottenham star player' he would like to reunite with at Bayern.
Furthermore, the Munich regional newspaper 'Abend Zeitung' reported that "Kane asked Bayern director Max Eberl to recruit Son Heung-min, who was his attacking partner at his former club."
At the time, 'Abend Zeitung' described Son Heung-min, stating, "Despite being in his mid-30s, he still possesses exceptional scoring and assisting abilities. His versatility in various positions makes him an attractive forward for Bayern."
