Supreme Court justice nominee Kim Sung-su said on the 14th, "Before the hearing even began, I am sorry for causing concern to the (personnel hearing) Commissioners and the public due to my oversight."
Kim said in opening remarks at the confirmation hearing at the National Assembly that day, "While preparing for the hearing, I looked back on my entire life. Going forward, I will take this as an opportunity to examine my conduct and words with an objective perspective and exercise prudence."
According to Joo Jin-woo of the People Power Party, Kim in May 2023 signed a sublease contract with his brother-in-law for the Dogok Rexle apartment in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the condition of a 350 million won deposit and 800,000 won monthly rent. Before that, Kim's brother-in-law had signed a jeonse contract with the apartment's owner for 1.5225 billion won and then provided a re-sublease to Kim. Kim did not properly pay the monthly rent to his brother-in-law, and he faced criticism that the difference from the jeonse market price is subject to gift tax.
Kim said, "If I am appointed as a Supreme Court justice with the consent of the people, I will, however modestly, help the judiciary move in step with the flow by closely reading the changes of the times."
