Police launched an investigation after 14 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition for a military rifle (M16) were found in an emergency stairwell of an apartment in Gwangju, South Jeolla.
According to police and others on the 13th, Gwangsan Police Station received a resident's report at about 7:55 a.m. that live rounds had been found in an apartment emergency stairwell. Police and military authorities were dispatched to the scene and confirmed that 14 rounds of 5.56 mm live ammunition were between the first and second floors of the apartment emergency stairwell.
The live rounds were reportedly placed in a paper box with no signs of use. Police believe there is no indication of an anti-state offense, noting that the rounds are for the now-discontinued M16 rifle.
However, how the live rounds were discarded in the emergency stairwell is under investigation.
