A woman in her 50s who clung to police to obstruct the arrest of her boyfriend—who was taken into custody at the scene after he refused a breath test and assaulted an officer—and even bit a police officer's finger, received a suspended prison sentence.
According to legal sources, on the 12th, Director General Judge Go Beom-jin of the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 said the previous day that he sentenced A, 55, indicted on charges of obstructing official duties and causing injury, to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered 80 hours of community service.
A was brought to trial on charges of obstructing a police officer's arrest duties and causing injury at about 12:08 a.m. on Mar. 1 on a road in Sokcho, Gangwon.
At the time, police responded to a 112 call saying "drunk driving is suspected" and went to the scene, where they requested a breath test from A's boyfriend. The man refused the test and assaulted an officer, and was arrested at the scene on suspicion of obstructing official duties.
During this process, A clung to her boyfriend and obstructed the arrest. When a responding officer tried to pull A away, A bit the officer's right index finger.
As a result, the officer suffered an injury that required about two weeks of treatment.
Director General Judge Go said, "The defendant has not yet been forgiven by the victim," noting, "However, considering that the defendant fully admitted the crime and has no prior record of punishment for the same type of offense, the court determined the sentence accordingly."
