Prosecutors sought the death penalty, the maximum sentence allowed by law, for a singer and YouTuber in their 40s who was brought to trial on charges of beating a teenage biological daughter with a wooden stick, pouring hot water on her, and failing to provide proper aid, causing her death.
According to the Jinju branch of the Changwon District Court on the 11th, at the sentencing hearing held on the 10th under the Criminal Division 1 (presiding judge Lee Seung-il, senior judge), prosecutors asked the court to impose the death penalty on A, in their 40s, who has been detained and indicted on charges including murder.
Prosecutors said, "A, consumed by the delusion that 'embarrassment was caused during social life' because of B, the biological daughter, struck B multiple times with a wooden stick and poured hot water on the crown of the head, causing second-degree burns to parts of the body."
They added, "Even though B pleaded multiple times that breathing was difficult, this was neglected," and noted, "The victim (B), who was betrayed by the parents who should have been most trusted and relied upon, died in excruciating pain."
Prosecutors explained their sentencing request by saying, "Over the one year of trial, A showed no remorse and denied the crime and responsibility, indicating extremely poor circumstances, and considering a past record of spousal assault, the risk of reoffending is high, necessitating permanent isolation from society."
A's side strongly denied the murder charge. The attorney argued, in essence, that while it is heartbreaking that taking B late to the hospital led to her death, there was no intent to kill, and appealed for leniency.
A was detained and indicted on charges including beating B, a teenage biological daughter who was on a leave of absence from school, at a residence in Namhae County, South Gyeongsang, in September last year, and leaving her in a vehicle, causing her death.
The sentencing hearing for A is scheduled for the 8th of next month.
