Kim Hyun-su, dean of the Pusan National University School of Law, was elected the 13th chair of the incorporated Association of Law Schools. The term runs for two years starting Oct. 11.
According to the Association of Law Schools on the 10th, on the 9th in Seoul at the 88th general assembly, Dean Kim was elected the new chair. Kim, the new chair, graduated from the Pusan National University College of Law and its graduate school and earned a Master of Laws and Doctor of Juridical Science at the University of Illinois College of Law.
Kim, the new chair, is currently a professor of civil law at the Pusan National University School of Law. Kim also serves as honorary president of the Korean Land Law Association and president of the Korean Consumer Law Association. Kim is also active as a member of the Ministry of Government Legislation's Statutory Interpretation Committee and as a Commissioner on the Personal Information Protection Commission's Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee.
The Association of Law Schools is a council whose members are the heads of the 25 law schools nationwide. It handles the drafting and administration of the Legal Education Eligibility Test (LEET) and mock bar exams, research on the law school system and operations, and projects to promote information exchange and cooperation among domestic and foreign law schools.
The association chair gathers opinions from the 25 member schools nationwide and consults with relevant bodies, including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice, the judiciary, and the legal community, on key issues in legal education and the system for training legal professionals. The chair also serves ex officio as a Commissioner on the Supreme Court justice candidate recommendation committee and the Constitutional Court justice recommendation committee under the relevant laws.
Kim, the new chair, said, "It is time to calmly review the achievements and limits of the law school system and to seek together the direction of legal education that fits the changing society and legal service environment," adding, "We will develop a legal education model that responds to artificial intelligence and digital transformation, and we will also work to ensure balanced development between regional and Seoul metropolitan law schools and to strengthen communication with related institutions."
